It's not "words we can no longer use" but "words we should be using correctly". Unless you've morphed into humpty-dumpty, "promote" means "advocate, encourage, recommend" (perhaps, as is presumably feared here, at the expense of "normal" relationships). But this is not what is being recommended. The word that the article ought to use is something closer to "portray positively", meaning that teachers should avoid denigrating relationships, and describe them instead as nothing to fear if that's what you want.

No-one is being asked to seek out a gay relationship regardless of their wishes. Instead, those who do want such relationships ought to feel no pressure to do otherwise.

Changing 'positive portrayal' to 'Promote is obviously an error - a deliberate one.

By repeating the deliberate error does not make you innocent of mischief making.

No one is telling you that you cannot say 'Promote' because it is banned. They are telling you it is the wrong word because no one said it, they said 'positive portrayal'.

Thanks for pointing that out I wonder if there was a National Muslim Teacher's Union conference?

I ask this because in the report it stated Christian teacher's views on this, and the fact that in the event of these teachers being opposed to teaching against their religious views, could they expect support from their Union.

But strangely enough it did not mention Muslim teachers who could hold much stronger views on this subject, what then?

So before we bander about the meaning of certain words, perhaps we should be debating the real issues?
AOG

I think you've highlighted something important - why is it that Christians always seem to be the ones outraged by equality for gay people?
And regarding your post on 'banned words', please see Gromit and jim360's post.

They've nailed it.
AOG

Teachers are employed to teach, not to promote their religious views.

If there is a conflict they should follow Government guidance. If they disagree with Government Guidance, they should either lump it or change profession.

The call for a 'positive portrayal' was to influence Government Guidance. If Christians or Muslims diagree, they should lobby the Government to not have any positive portrayal.
Because the Christian church believes in the sanctity of marriage between man and woman for procreation etc etc etc.
AOG

I suggest you read the report again.

No Christian teacher was approached for their views, so why should Muslim teachers be approached?

All we know is the views of the following bodies:

Christian Institute
Christian Concern
Campaign for Real Education

None of these have a mandate to speak for Christian teachers.

They are all lobby groups.
I need no brainwashing class to force me to believe that up is down and left is right. Even though so many seem to have already taken it.

It also means 'Support': advocate, PROMOTE, further champion, be in favour of, defend etc etc.

With such a nit picking mind such as yours, and your readiness to dish out false accusations, it furthers me to query on how on earth you ever became a AB moderator?

Are you so *** perfect?

If this Telegraph Headline upsets you so much, perhaps you should get in touch with their sub-editor.

*** 'Promote gay relationships as positive in school,' teachers say ***
Positive portrayal does not mean to Promote.

The inference is that at the moment, homosexuals get a negative portrayal. That is probably true in some faith schools, but generally is not true in most schools.
I doubt changing the Government's Teaching Guidance to say that homosexuals should be portrayed more positively will make any difference to daith schools. They will just ignore it.

I have a a theory as to what the core of this issue is...

Previous generations spent millions of pounds in man hours in courts up and down the country actively persecuting gay men. Now, we are told by those who remember those days that 'it was a different time, with different social constructs and we shouldn't judge society then, based on our more enlightened attitudes now'.

Perhaps the core of the problem is that some are judging attitudes of today, based on their own attitudes, which are 'of the past'?
AOG

You really need to get over the fact that I am a moderator. Your constant referring to it is embarrasing.
For goodness sake, let us get back to basics. Children go to school to be educated, let them be taught Maths, English, Spelling etc. I am old enough to remember school as it should be, I never had a lesson about sex in my life let alone sexual choices, it was in my day an unwritten law that one grew up & met one of the opposite sex, married & had children to extend the human race. I get the distinct impression that sex has recently been re-discovered in all its many forms, I suggest in fact that it has been going on for an awfully long time without any interference from anyone.

And this at a time when you amongst others are questioning me along with the Telegraph for twisting words.

Christians are not outraged by equality for gay people as you so wrongly chose to put.

Gay people along with the rest of their fellow men, have every right to be treated equally, it is just their sexual orientation that goes against their Christian beliefs.

You wrote:

Yes they are.

In the Telegraph report, Simon Calvert is outraged.

This move is to ensure gay relationships are defined as equal in the school sex education curriculum.

This has outraged Christians.

Therefore...why?

Why is it so outrageous?

That's what is know as an 'origami argument'.

You've folded yourself up into an unimaginable shape there.

You can see it right?

Just because a law has been passed does not automatically alter everyone's mind or attitude, in fact it has been proven time and time again that some law changes infuriates all manner of peoples.

Say somewhere down the years, the law was altered to make paedophilia no longer unlawful, because those likely to commit those offences where born like it, could you expect everyone then to accept that?

It may be for you, but it certainly isn't for me.

To think that a person who posses a mind set such as yours, actually has the power to delete anything that you yourself disagrees with, is rather concerning, especially when that person has been incorrectly accused by you.
