I thought I would start a separate thread on the situation in Ukraine as several of the other related threads are getting a bit fractious and have long since deviated from the original question.
That isn't a criticism: it's human nature and shows we're free to argue.

This man was miraculously pulled from his car in Obolon (N Kyiv) after it was steamrollered by a Russian tank. The "denazification" process continues (!)

ICH, I have watched a couple of different videos showing the incident.

Does it looks like it was stuck to you?
I find it quite amazing that on here 'we' are arguing over whether something was a tank and who was driving (something no one can really know unless you were in the 'tank') when people are fighting and loosing their lives in the hope of keeping their freedom.

Absolutely ymb

I’m sorry I posted the wretched thing
It was a SAM Surface-to-air missile vehicle.

The Russians would not be rolling into town with SAMs leading the charge.

My speculation is (and that's all it is)it was hijacked. Either the driver wasn't that good at driving or he was a sadistic bastad.
More a terrorist rather than a soldier.

Putin is fast running out of allies on the World stage. It's also remarkable how this blatant act of war has drawn together leaders from across the political spectrum, including many who I'm not fond of. When, for example, Erdogan and Orban, Macron and Johnson, Biden and Scholz, are all on the same side, you know you've done ****ed up.

I'm dearly hoping that this will end up playing out rather like the Italian invasion of Greece in 1940: an utter humiliation for the aggressors. Only, this time, with no Hitler (in the shape of Xi Jinping?) to come to the rescue.
Looks like the Ruskis didn't really learn anything in Afghanistan.
mornin ich - how goes it in Ukraine today?
Putin wants peace talks.
Zelensky has refused offer of peace talks in Belarus.
England cancels Russian Ballet dates in UK. Russia banned from Eurovision.
He’s suggested other places, Warsaw and Budapest among them. Sorry, I can’t post a link.

The fog of war.
Lukashenko says Russian casualties being treated in Belarusian hospitals which is odd because Russia claim to be e none.
Town of Irpin near Kyiv captured and then retaken.
Allegations of shelling of civilians in Bucha
We have text message contact with resistance fighters in Kyiv but obviously
they’re a bit busy
^For talks - not ballet. Cross posted.

Yep: Orban in particular. V odd to see him at the border meeting refugees

Kharkiv authorities claim to have driven the Russians out of the city.

I hope that is true

It's also nice that a lot of us who wind each other up on here or simply disagree are united on this too.

Tho I would give anything to be arguing about Brexit and the government etc and this not to be happening
Is it naive to feel a note of optimism? The longer this drags on, the more embarrassing it will be for Putin. Particularly when the dead soldiers, of which there may already be a few thousand, start to come home in body bags.

Wars are rarely short affairs, and there is potentially a long way to go. But I don't believe that a protracted struggle serves Putin's interests at all. In particular, if Kyiv and other key cities remain in Ukrainian control throughout March, I can easily Putin being deposed before the year is out. It would be a humiliation. And for strongman leaders, humiliation is fatal.
