Tony Blair knighted and appointed to the Order of the Garter.Bit of a surprise considering he’s been such a divisive character.

Some of these knighthoods are a total joke and disrespect those that really deserve them.
Tony Blair's knighthood was a decision made by the Queen so I doubt she will be bothered about any petition.
The Queen is advised Corby. I doubt she is aware who some of them are. The decisions are really made by a Committee.
As I understand it, the convention of giving a former PM a knighthood usually occurs within about 3/4 years of him leaving office; it has been 14 years since he left No. 10. And until he was knighted, none of his (more successful - you decide) successors can be similarly rewarded.
I suspect there are few people who are genuinely pleased for him, I'm not one of them.....and knowing that his wife will be *Lady* Cherie is making me feel slightly nauseous.

I'll bet that she already has the new letter headings printed, jth.
As Lady Blair or Lady Booth, Tony? Maybe she will go for a name-change by deed poll to Lady She-Devil?
Lottie, Orders of the Garter don't come through the usual committee, they really are the Queen's decision.
Lady Booth Blair I recon, DTC.
don't worry, tonyav, you'll get Lady Carrie soon enough. Unless Boris has moved on through a couple more wives since then, I suppose.
Doubt if there will be a Lady Victoria though.
Indeed they are very much Her Maj's choice - after all, it is one of the oldest orders of chivalry around - the oldest actually dating from 1348 and Ed III..... He get a coat of arms in the chapel at Windsor too...two flats and missing arms probably, a surmount with a bush and a hussyein.
I only know 2 people who got an award yet they must hand out thousands every year .am I moving in the wrong circles ?
However loathsome Sit Tony is, the fact remains that he is Labour's last elected PM and the only Labour PM ever to win three elections on the trot. That alone is worthy of honour. Yes, he invaded Iraq, on a mandate from MP's such as David Lammy, but went on to win another election after that. He is Labour's most successful PM ever, and has been followed by a ragbag mob of wet rags and robots. Who knows, a few decades from now, Labour could win again under Euan or Leo Blair?! Boris is likely to retire when he gets to 75.
Wonder where Tom Daley will be hanging his OBE?!

I thought he was New Labour !
You okay, Spungle? Only that’s a really weird thing to be wondering about.

He'll probably knit himself a chain to hang it from ;-)
A Royal Appointment well done The QUEEN And well deserved Tony.. Enjoy .

Absolutely pat. It was ever thus: Sir Ringo Starr to name just one - plenty of others
^^^^^^^Yep a lot of musicians seem to get a gong for managing to live a long time imo.
