Ultimately, it was Baldwin's responsibility to check. I have no experience, except Pony Club pistol shooting lol... but even then, she fired it behind her to check first. And, it did go off.
Poor lady. RIP.

I'm at a loss to understand how this happened tho. I was always taught that you never ever ever point a gun, whether it's loaded or not, save when you take your shot ensuring people are behind you. Otherwise it should be carried open and down and unloaded. But I don't know how a film set works. Even so, never pointing a gun at anyone is common sense.
I wonder if he did point it at her, or whether it did somehow explode and go everywhere?
Honestly, don't understand how blanks work, anyway. Sometimes, they are fatal, but clearly meant to be safe?
Blanks aren't always safe since bits of the casing can shatter.

You just don't point a gun. Ever.
I read that some people had left the set due to concerns over safety, and that there had been 2 other incidents with guns.
I'm not a fan of conspiracy theories usually, but it sounds very suspicious to me - why ever would there be a real live bullet on a film set at all (easy enough to make a dummy one), let alone loaded into a gun. I feel sorry for Baldwin who has unwittingly carried out this killing.
//But I don't know how a film set works.//

I feel sorry for Halyna too, The safety officers follow or are meant to follow the guns around the set....best practice.

accidental shootings do occur

this is the thorp rd shooting: one police man shoots another oops by mistake !

shot man's girlie forgives the shooter
but coroner still makes a helluva stink

In a good going cack up never underestimate the role of incompetence....
Barmaid, while in the army, whenever we were out on 'exercise' we always had bright yellow flash attachments on the end of our SLRs. They deflected any fragments of shell casing, etc, out to the sides of the weapon. Obviously this wouldn't work on a film set.
As you say, guns loaded with whatever ammo ought never to be aimed directly at another person.
//Ultimately, it was Baldwin's responsibility to check.//

I don't believe that. If an actor is given a prop gun to use, he should be able to assume that it's not loaded with live ammunition and is safe to use. There's no reason he should think otherwise.
Pixie // Honestly, don't understand how blanks work, anyway. Sometimes, they are fatal, but clearly meant to be safe?//

The pistol was loaded with live bullets not blanks.

Blanks give the impression of a gun being shot ie kick back ,muzzle flash, noise, but no projectile (bullet) is launched out of the barrel.
I think this whole sorry tale will (hopefully) see the end of blanks being used in movies. All effects can easily be done in post production nowadays, using CGI.

I agree 100%. It isn't the actors job to check the props. If an actor is told a gun is a prop, they should be able to take that as gospel.
When you consider the many thousands of fake guns used in movies, this defies belief. I can't help thinking there's something very fishy about the whole thing - although I might be wrong.
Terrible business, if anyone remembers Monk? it sound like one his cases.
I would have expected Shoota to be on this thread - what happened to him btw?

No need for CGI, do what I mentioned earlier.
It appears that some of the crew had used some of the guns during target practice.

Regarding the suggestion of using a "tripod, cable release or wireless remote", if a live round is in the barrel, a live round will leave the barrel.

As a cable or tripod would need to be removed from the scene digitally, CGI might as well be used in the first place.
Given the well documented gun violence and consequent results in the US, I doubt that one incident on a film set will do much to change anything.
Mozz // I think this whole sorry tale will (hopefully) see the end of blanks//

What part of " The gun was loaded with a live round" do you not understand?

Why should an incident with live ammo see the end of Blanks on set?
When I was trained on gun usage, you always checked a gun was unloaded when you received it. If you passed it to someone else you showed them it was empty.

Perhaps US standards on gun use aren't as strict, but they obviously should be.
It was a low budget set with an amourer with very little experience.
I have been trained to use firearms, but an actor might not have the same automatic reaction as a trained user would -that is ask if it's loaded and then personally check it.

'Treat as gun as if its loaded and a horse as if it kicks'
