Roy, it's perfectly possible they wanted a shot of the character firing the gun towards the camera which would explain how the cinematographer and director standing behind her were hit.

I know that is perfectly possible but...tripod, cable release or wireless remote.
Given that these props have injured before that's not rocket science.
For everyone talking about live rounds, it's not unheard of that a blank cartridge is fired from a prop gun. It's rare but not unheard of. The fact that two people were hit by it suggests that is exactly what happened, with the cartridge disintegrating in mid flight, splitting into several pieces.

It does seem like a tragic accident, but only time will tell what really happened.
Mozz, as I read it, the second person injured was standing behind the one killed. This may imply the bullet went through her, I don't know.

As to why anyone would point a gun at anyone ... well, because they had reason to believe it wasn't a real gun, and didn't contain real bullets, I suppose. It's a very uncommon occurrence, as evidenced by people looking back almost 30 years to Brandon Lee.
It was certainly a terrible thing to have happened which obviously should have not; however, after reading about it I must admit that this would be a great plot for a "Columbo" movie.
Sanmac, that’s exactly what I thought. Perfect plot for Colombo.
To counter Patsy’s rather odd comment, I’ve always liked him - he’s very watchable.

It’s tragic what’s happened, and the family must be utterly distraught, but spare a though for Baldwin; he has to live with the fact that he’s killed somebody. I can only judge how I would feel, and even though it’s entirely accidental, it would haunt me for the rest of my life.

They would also need to be stood close together if the cartridge shrapnelled (if that's a word) in mid flight. The same as you, I don't know. I hope it was an accident, because the alternative isn't worth thinking about.
The basic question which we are all asking is why, why was live ammunition even present at a movie set?
Mozz it was a live round not blanks. Actor Brandon Lee was killed by a blank cartridge while shooting 'The Crow'. There is no doubt, the Police confirmed it was live ammo in the gun, not blanks.
APG, it's now being claimed there had already been three accidental discharges on the set, "super unsafe"

It's just awful- for everyone involved. I read they were standing "next to each other", so to hit a woman in the chest and a man in the shoulder at the same time... does seem like it disintegrated straight after being fired?
The guy that handed Baldwin the actual gun, I believe he is called Halls, why on earth didn’t he check that the gun had/hadn’t live ammo in it??
He was supposed to. But also, if someone puts a gun in your hands, whatever they tell you, you are responsible, so it isn't entirely him, but a lot of mistakes. Also, Baldwin was the Producer, and has more responsibility than just an actor.... there should have been several points here, where everything was properly checked.

Apologies. I had to dig around various news reports, but it seems you are right. The fact there was live ammo certainly does make things a little more sinister, although it does seem that Mr Baldwin was completely unaware that the gun was loaded. (There was a call of "clean gun" before the incident, which apparently is movie talk for a empty gun.)

Further apologies. "Cold gun" rather than "Clean"
Sorry for the family of the guy that died more like
Roadman, not a guy, the DP was a 42 year old married mother of one.
Woman... I think you can have sympathy for more than one person, nobody won here.
Bentaxie is right. I was in the cadet force many years ago, and it was drilled into us you never point a gun at anyone, even if you know for certain it is not loaded.

It sounds like I'll discipline to me. I wonder what training he had, and whether he felt it didn't apply to him.
it's more than that, though, Hopkirk. "Prop" gun sometimes doesn't even mean real gun, let alone one with real bullets. It seems the meaning of the word hasn't been standardised in the industry, so there's a lot of scope for confusion. In theory Baldwin could just have thought he was being given something like a cap pistol.

However, if it's true his stunt double had twice found himself firing real bullets on the set already, then something's seriously amiss.
