A lovely puzzle from Fieldfare with a grammatical imperative in the preamble's instruction. Also some very inventive clue constructions. Bravo !

4d Repair and set up game controller on computers (5) RE?IT

refit?

10a Insignificant type dropped in a river ...ADEQUATE...how does that work please?

Refit = repair

game controller = Ref

IT = computers

10a Quat in "a Dee"

Refit - repair and set up

Adequate - the definition was"that's enough!"

Many thanks JJ109

yes a very difficult offerin i thought. I have the two artists and i have the works by them but i am struggling with the beginning of the quote.

meantime there are some stubborn clues:

14A Creature has cuckoo illness (6)

?NI???

I guess it could be ANIMAL with MAL being illness?

25A A newtowrk assembled at rocky ridge. (5)

A?E?E

i suppose it is arete but how does the clueing work?

36D Film about Mrs French. i have EM?ET would it be M in the middle?

41A From the east chap that is retainedas a friend (2,3)

I have ?n-AM?

presumably un ami but how does that parse?

17A Fallen angel's joy cut short on earth (5)

???I?

Thank you!

ani = cuckoo mal illness

en ami contained from east

eblis muslim devil

what is a quat? can someone explain

14a Ani is a cuckoo

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ani_(bird)

25 a rete (body network) = arete (rocky ridge)

36 Emmet an ant/social creature = ET aroun Mme (madame or Mrs in French)

41a En ami  reversed man in ie

17a Eblis (fallen angel) = E(arth)+ blis(s)

Thanks everyone. cant find the quote on line as attributhed to our artist but i have figured it out

I was confused by the need to put 'to' between the two names along the top line. The quote doesn't seem to be online, but I pieced it together bit by bit. Have you got it now, johnpiper?

Question Author

Boethius, you could have 'to' as the preposition along the top line but the preamble more correctly leads you to 'of'

I had to guess the quote then found it on the internet.  Yes, it was there but it didn't appear when asking for quotes from the speaker.  Strange.

On the top line, I put 'on'. 'Of' seems better, now I about think about it.

I can't find the quote! Could someone guide me to the correct bit of Google please?

Tilly, do you have the ODQ? That's where I found it.

Question Author

Cloverjo, I suggest any preposition such as 'on', 'to' or 'of' would fit the clue but having read the preamble the only logical solution is 'of'. I remain open to conjecture

Yes, Maxxer, that's right. It has to be 'of', not 'to'.

No, Clover, I don't. I did but cannot find it!
