Ron Atkinson was dropped by ITV for making a racist remark off air, surely this is just as bad and should result in Sky dropping him.

I was appalled by this when I saw it. I had hitherto thought Carragher was a gentleman. How wrong was I...
Dreadful behaviour, and he has to go.
No excuses he has to go.
Better still he should hold his hands up admit to being a complete twonk and resign.
while we're on the subject, why do footballers have to spit so much during a game?
Question Author
ael.......it is just habit......and a bad and disgusting habit as well.
He should go.
As for that plonker who thought it a good idea to wind up another human being when he had his daughter in the car needs a good telling off too.

Why are football fans such idiots? Can you imagine an Andy Murray fan taunting a Djokovic supporter after he lost Wimbledon?
Just on the news.He is going to visit the family to apologise.Admitted he was wrong, but said he was goaded into it.
The driver using his mobile faces 6 penalty points and £200 fine. Furthermore he could have caused an accident. Not that it excuses the spitting from Carragher. What I found amazing was the amount of spittle and the fact that it didn't blow back in Jamie's face.
I don't care how much 'goading' any man gets, or how famous or not he is, spitting at someone is utterly disgusting and inexcusable.

Part of the payback for a millionaire football career, and a million-pound TV contract, is that the public will bother you, and all you are required to do in return is act like a mature human being.

If Sky want to send a message to the world at large, that it does not pay eight figures for the opinion of ill-tempered yobs, it will sack Carragher forthwith.

Without being too graphic, running for a period of time produces excess saliva which is thicker than that normally produced to lubricate and aid digestion. It can interfere with breathing, so it is best disposed of, which footballers tend to do.
The spit has hit the fan!

I don't buy that explanation one little bit.
Why don't Marathon runners, Oarsmen, Tennis players, Rugby players ( to a less extent) cricketers, "spit" due to excess saliva and interfering with breathing is just nonsense.....why not swallow it.
One often sees a footballer called from the bench to replace a player, "spits" as he runs onto the pitch.....surely sitting on the bench is not that physically exhausting.
No, it is just habit and affectation.

Fair enough - I merely passed on the explanation that was given to me years ago by a footballer - I have to agree, on the basis of your post, it looks pretty flimsy! I will be delighted not to offer it again as an explanation!!
i haven't noticed refs doing it?
Yes, it's disgusting, but a sacking matter?

Really?

An apology and move on.

A-H....LOL....no! no! no! offer that explanation as often as you like, as my post was just my opinion .

I think this is worse.

I would never condone Mr Atkinson's remarks, but in context, his is a generation that used such horrible terms, and he spoke without thought, as people often do.

Spitting requires forethought, it is an action you consciously decide to undertake, and the notion of 'losing it' does not begin to excuse such behaviour.

There is an argument that racist language results from poor education and thoughtless speech, there is absolutely no argument whatsoever that can excuse spitting at someone.
We've been through all this before.
There is a world of difference between deliberately spitting at someone and expelling aliva from your mouth when training hard, in the company of no one. Happens all the time and I am not aware anyone has ever died from it or even passed the least remark. It's the sort of thing that exercises people who like to write to the papers :-)
Hopkirk - // Yes, it's disgusting, but a sacking matter?

Yes it is a sacking matter - if I had done it in my office when I was working, I would have been sacked - so would millions of others.

Carragher is in the public eye, paid an eight-figure salary, and it is not unreasonable to assume that in return, he can use the manners he was taught - assuming he was taught.

If you cannot present yourself as a decent human being with the maturity and temperament to shake off the sort of attention you attract by the job you do, then do something else.

Sky, as a high-profile broadcaster, should exhibit the standards of behaviour expected of its employees, and dismiss Caragher today - football pundits are hardly a rarity, he can be replaced this afternoon.
