Ron Atkinson was dropped by ITV for making a racist remark off air, surely this is just as bad and should result in Sky dropping him.

And I don't think this is a sacking matter if he has apologised personally. If he can move on so can we all. Why do we always feel the need to extract a pound of flesh.
He wasn't at work at the time, so comparing it with you spitting in your office isn't a fair comparison.
You need to put subtitles on to understand what Carragher is saying any way, so it will not be a great loss if he goes.

I cannot think of one good reason why a TV Channel and Advertisers would want to be associated with such behaviour

"Why do we always feel the need to extract a pound of flesh."

Ichk.......yes, you are correct......this is a natural human reaction, for better or for worse.

Spitting has always been regarded as an unsavory, vulgar and maybe dangerous result of unregulated emotion, that is taught from childhood and certainly someone of high sporting profile on the flagship of a TV sports programme, should have shown restraint.
Sackable?......... difficult, but yes i think so.
He could easily have said 'go away please' (or words to that effect) or shown a finger or 2 instead of spitting.
ichkeria - // And I don't think this is a sacking matter if he has apologised personally. If he can move on so can we all. Why do we always feel the need to extract a pound of flesh. //

It is not about extracting 'a pound of flesh' - it is about sending out a message that what you or I would be arrested for - which is assault - is not something a TV pundit can get away with simply because he is in the public eye.

It is about unacceptable behaviour, and the appropriate punishment for it.
Hopkirk - // He wasn't at work at the time, so comparing it with you spitting in your office isn't a fair comparison. //

No, he was in the street, and had a police officer observed it, he would have been arrested for it.
Hopkirk, he doesn't get paid so much purely for football games- it's for being famous and attracting the public, which is a 24hr job. Spitting is counted as a form of assault, apart from being disgusting. He should be sacked at the very least.
Latest news. Now been suspended by Sky.
Happens all the time and I am not aware anyone has ever died from it

They can do by the spread of TB.
Not many do in this country now, but I remember a time when there were public notices up all over, with a cash penalty if anyone was caught spitting.
Unacceptable behaviour... deserves all that's coming his way...
He's 40 and should know how this stuff turns out by now (badly) - disappointed too with the unconcealed glee of the Father much to the embarrassment of his Daughter.

That was in reply to ichkeria 11.33 Monday.
He should be replaced by an English speaking punitator.

* Punditator *
Are the spitting police involved?
just what one doesn't expect, truly disgusting behaviour.

'Carragher is in the public eye, paid an eight-figure salary,'

Doubtful.

Does that somehow lessen his offence, because reports in the media that he is paid more than £1million by Sky for his opinions are inaccurate?

I don't care if he gives he fee to charity, or does it for nothing, the point is, he is highly paid to talk about football, and accepting that position means accepting the responsibilities that go with it.

One of those is a downside, the public will occasionally have a pop at you, simply because of who you are, and because they can.

The responsibility bit is that confronted with someone being unpleasant, you act like the mature individual you are supposed to be and walk, or in this case, drive away.

You do not spit at a total stranger with a child in his car!

Which part of that are you finding difficulty with?
