Hello i have recently ordered a new car using the scrappage scheme.
I had to give a £200 deposit for the first registration. The dealer told me that the car would be ready by the middle of november 09.
I phoned him up and now he is telling me that it will be by the end of this month.
I am not happy about the long wait (6weeks). Can i demand my deposit back?

The end of the month is next Monday. I wouldn't think it was worth kicking up a stink when you have less than a week to go.
yes and you are kin mental buying a new car anyway!

Hi R1Geezer the reason im buying new is cos im tired of buying secondhand cars and ending up with head gasket trouble . Ive had three different makes of car so far.

yes you can ask for your deposit back if the supplier has not kept to the contract (ie if they specified a date for delivery and didnt deliver on time)

Perhaps advise then now that unless car is delivered on 1st (no point taking earlier and wasting a months tax for 4 days now is there) that you will cancel order and request refund
i would have thought if yu have ordered the car you couldn't cancel the order now

Ive only had the Rover for 15months.

Thankyou all for your help. I think i will wait till the end of the month and then decide what to do :)
head gasketts go mostly for one reason only, the engine has overheated and warped the head, this means it won't fit to the block. It is very easy to tell if a car has ever overheated. Anyway good luck but there are no guarentees with a new car either. You'll halve the value as you drive away. The Scrappage scheme is largely irrelevant. Any dealer will give you 2k off a new car anyway.
Hi Jackie, from what I gather from one of your answers Re/ Head Gaskets, head Gasket go for one main reason, lack of water, this can be caused at a very early stage by someone that neglects the car Eg/ water etc. Advise always given to anyone either on this site or outside this site, if you are buying 2ND hand and you know nothing about cars, ask someone to go with you its as simple as that Its too late when you have paid for the thing then finding out there is a problem, to what you say about your new car, take some advise BEFORE YOU SIGN FOR IT, CHECK IT I mean the new car, they do come with dents, scratches, alloy damage, cracked glass, something not working, it's up to you to check. ( You have been warned) please do not take this as criticism only advise.
I had a Rover 214.

The head gasket blew.
The first new car I ordered took over 4 months to be delivered. I thought about cancelling the order but when I checked the paperwork there was a clause that said it could only be cancelled if it was a month overdue and then I had to give them one months notice.
I decided I wouldn't be able to place another order for 2 months or I could end up with two cars so put up with all the excuses about delays.
I'm surprised you have to wait for it. I know there is a huge demand at the moment but are you being too picky either in the colour or extras on that model. Usually they can ship your car from another branch in the network which would not take too long.
I've had to wait 15 weeks to collect my new,. standard in every way, car. I didn't care about the colour. Some cars are selling long before they reach the country because of the scrappage scheme and the imminent rise in VAT.
I saw on the news a few weeks ago that every single car on a huge ship docking at the UK had been pre-bought.

I have been waitng for 7 weeks for my new car. I phoned the dealer last week to find out when it will come, and he said that he would find out and get back to me. Its now 4th dec and i still havent heard anything. He told me it would be here by the end november. I am now going to the citizens advice to find out what my rights are.
