It now appears that the Post Office underpaid more than £100 million in tax and used dodgy accounting practices to inflate senior executives pay.

You can bet your life no senior Post Office employee will be jailed over this ongoing scandal.

The post office is owned by the government so would need bailing out if has to pay the tax.

It's not clear whether it was an unlawful tax deduction but if it was it came under the watch of several governments .

yeah but noo but

The post office minister has said that he thinks the people Responsible should go to prison and  is now probably a future ex-minister ( usurping function of courts - that all the ya-ya about a group pardon by law is all about)

Fines are not claimable - but costs on appeal of tax cases ARE claimable and no I am not aware of the relevant ssection of  which Finance Act it is,

BUT it depends on the wording - nefarious activities ( not claimable - or fines in court ( claimable)

as with the Post Office and "repay everything!" it dpends on the words.

a propos you noticed that eef the loss was due to the machine and not the person, then the post office contract making them repay any  losses did  NOT apply...... and no one that noticed for 20 y ?

makes you wanna do law, innit

few points  there sozza

claimable if  only fines are excluded - non claimable if it is anything narty -  fixed penalties ( parking) are NOT claimable by the way

at the time the claim was made ( tax reduction that is) the accountant will say he thought at the time it was contract/tort

the contract didnt apply to machine losses has only just come up

if the P.O. is insolvent - then the govt can move in and change the mgt without any mess

Damn savages ......etc

This youtube video of Ian Hislop (Private Eye Editor) on Robert Peston’s programme is well worth a watch – as it shows that there is still a long, long way to go before those wronged by the Post Office receive adequate compensation (if ever), and those responsible for this scandal brought to justice (jailed).

they ( some) are going for 'restitution' to be put back to where they  were -

some hope

hi hymie - there is a certain amount of stabby stabby going on this  evg

An amazing video, thanks Hymie.

Hislop speaks a few home truths – despite the government’s insistence that they are on the case, I’m sure they would like it all to go away.

There is no way adequate compensation will be paid to all those affected by the time of the General Election; let’s hope the press don’t forget these unfortunate victims, or those responsible for the scandal.

If only there was a way to get all the bonuses back from the dishonest and fraudulent bosses.

As it is, the PO will probably just be hit with a huge tax bill. Ie the taxpayer will pay, while the lying fat cats walk away from the problem.
