Not sure where to put this. A friend of mine lives with her mum who is in her eighties. Friends mum is in receipt of income support and housing benefit, friend has a part time job and everything is declared to DWP and local council. Her mum has had a lot of health problems over the past year, is unsteady on her feet and has been diagnosed with epilepsy.

My question is, if my friend were to become her mums carer, she is thinking of giving up her job, what would happen to the money her mother receives? Thanks in advance.

You only get Carer's Allowance if the person you are caring for is in receipt of DLA care component at middle rate or higher rate.

I'm not sure what you mean by what would happen to the money the mum receives, is the daughter planning to move in with her?

Daughter already lives with her mum, but thanks daffy, her mum is not in receipt of DLA, so the question is void, thanks a lot for your reply though.
It can also be claimed if the person cared for gets attendance allowance, if her mum doesn't get this benefit she can claim and hope for the best. She is past the age where a new claim for DLA is possible.

Your friends mum may be entitled to Attendance Allowance if she were to apply in which case if she was in receipt of that and her daughter cared for her for at least 35 hours per week with personal care then she would also then be able to apply for Carer's Allowance at present £58.45p per week. Don't know what effect that would have on other benefits.
nothing.....her mother should be getting her pension, housing benefit and attendance allowance as to the epilepsy. Your friend should get the carers which is £60 a week.....be careful if she travels as technically if she is away for more than a week or ten days, she should declare her absence and the allowance stops temporarily.

Thanks all, will let her know when she comes round.
.

it sounds as tho the mother is going to become eligible for DLA.

The other thing is... DLA is gonna morph into PIP (personal independence payment ) in April 2013 - yes three weeks and so it may be worth applying now.

i think it's rather unlikely that the mother is going to anti-age by 20 yeas peter pedant, so i would highly doubt she is going to become eligible for DLA, in the next 3 weeks or after!
