First Gay President?

Republican presidential candidate Fred Karger has already launched a campaign for the nomination in the key states of Iowa and New Hampshire, well that's fair enough, but why the need to mention he is gay? Or is he using the fact that he is gay to perhaps further his chances at becoming the first gay President of the United States?
Yes I can see it now, they already have the first black president, will it next be the first gay President or will either Hillary Clinton or Sarah Palin pip him at the post to become the first woman President?
Much better to select the the best man/woman for the job, than what their sexual orientation is.

I absolutely agree that his sexuality should have no impact at all on his candidateship, however, I think the article is merely mentioning as well that he is a gay rights campaigner, which is obviously something he feels is important. By being a gay rights campaigner hes going to use any public attention to advertise this campaign.
I think that's fair enough as long has he doesn't mix the two. He should want to run the country in the best interests of everybody.
That said, I'm sure he'd be proud to be the first openly gay president as it would then also reflect the endeavours of the gay rights campaign.

Why mention he's gay? Can you imagine if he kept it secret? He wouldn't stand a hope in hell, as opposed to having very little chance, which is what he has now.
Gay people are damned if they don't and damned if they do. Ricky Martin came out and was both criticised for keeping his homosexuality secret and praised for being honest.
We so often hear "why do gay people have to announce their sexuality", when by implication, straight people do it all the time. When David Cameron gets hisbmissus pregnant, web assume he's straight. When we see pictures of Orlando Bloom with his new girlfriend we assume he's straight. When we read about Jay-Z and Beyonce we assume their straight.
Gay people have two choices - to keep silent and listen to people gossip about them (a la Kevin Spacey) or put it out there so it's not an issue.
I wish him the very best of luck. If he does well in the primaries it will once again prove conclusively that the western world is moving away from the pre-requisite that to lead, you have to be a White straight male.

First let me make it clear that I have my own views on homosexuality, but I myself would not go as far to say that they are some kind of deviants.

That may be your view and that of many others, but to say it is no longer viewed as a deviancy in modern society, is stretching it a bit too far.
There are many people and for just as many reasons, that some still find homosexuality a deviancy, and just as you have your opinion on matters, one must also allow others to have their opinions, without the need for others of an opposite opinion to call them bigots or even a descendant of the Witch-Finder General.

Of course they are allowed opinions, just as everyone else is, providing those opinions don't flout the laws of this country, and are not traitorous or anti-British in any other way.
The simply solution being if you don't like Britain or the British, then you are free to live in a country that is more to your liking.
