'Nigel Farage has topped a poll on who should be the next Tory leader, with Suella Braverman second and Boris Johnson third.

The Express asked readers who they thought should replace Rishi Sunak as he faces a crisis over the Rwanda scheme.

As of 6pm yesterday, more than 5,000 people had voted in the survey on this website.

Mr Farage, the former Ukip and Brexit Party leader who is currently taking part in I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here, came first with 41 per cent despite not currently being a Tory member'

Presumably the good old Express had Farage as one of the options to vote for. These are the sort of polls that end up with people wanting Coco the clown to replace King Charles. Amusing but probably saying more about the pollsters and their target

The simplest way it could happen is for a safe Tory constituency to realise the situation the party is in and offer NF whatever it takes to convince him to get on board. Then hear the sigh of relief from the rest of the party when the members realise they finally have a member they can vote in as leader to change things around.

Does he have to be elected as an MP - or as a member of the Conservative party (which he isn't at the moment but that's an easy fix), could he be offered the job as David Cameron was offered his latest senior role? I don't know.

In theory, no, and that applies to the PM as well. But there is a convention of accountability: Cameron (whose return I welcomed) was made a Lord because he couldn't just be made an MP. For Nigel Farage, he'd first have to become a Tory party member, then he'd have to be selected for a constituency, then he'd have to win that seat, then he'd have to stand for the leadership and then, here's the real biggie, he'd have to convince enough MPs to put him up in any leadership contest.

But you have to see, and it may be difficult, that beyond the readership of the Daily Express, and a pretty narrow band of political opinion, Farage is a toxic brand: as I always say, Dominic Cummings realised this when he was conducting his brilliant Brexit campaign: realised Johnson was a huge asset, Farage a huge liability.

If not for Farage, Cummings wouldn't have been in a position to make such a choice.

It is a generally accepted fact that Farage was the initiator & driving force behind Brexit. If he wasn't who was ?

Not at all: but it's easier route back into parliament. Quite how accountable that makes him of course is another matter. I like the idea tho that non-parliamentarians can be brought in as ministers.
