The Tory MP Owen Paterson faces a 30-day suspension from the House of Commons for an “egregious” breach of lobbying rules, raising the possibility he could lose his seat if enough constituents trigger a byelection.

Parliamentary standards commissioner Kathryn Stone’s investigation, which was launched in October 2019, found Paterson had worked as a consultant to Randox, a clinical diagnostics company, since August 2015, and Lynn’s Country Foods, a processor and distributor of meat products, since December 2016.
She said he made three approaches to the Food Standards Agency relating to Randox and the testing of antibiotics in milk; seven approaches to the same agency relating to Lynn’s Country Foods; and four approaches to ministers at the Department for International Development relating to Randox and blood testing technology.

// The parliamentary commissioner is in charge of regulating MPs' conduct and propriety. One of the Commissioner's main tasks is overseeing the Register of Members' Financial Interests, which is intended to ensure disclosure of financial interests that may be of relevance to MPs' work.
The Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards is appointed by a Resolution of the House of Commons for a fixed term of five years and is an independent officer of the House. //
and your point or question is?

He deserves to be suspended - wan't he paid something like £45k by Randox - all bloody suspicious to me.

I don’t.
He won’t be suspended. Instead the Conservative MPs are voting to sack the independent commissioner because they don’t like her findings, and replace her with a committee with a built in Conservative majority.

Very sleazy.

Boris Johnson has confirmed he backs plans to rip up parliament’s procedures for punishing MP sleaze following a finding against Conservative former minister Owen Paterson, in a move which Labour said marked “a return to the worst of the 1990s Tory sleaze culture”..

Government whips are said to be telling Tory MPs to today vote against imposing a 30-day suspension on Owen Paterson.
I think there are two problems, one is this bloke who, from what I can establish, broke the rules and should be suspended. The other is over the impartiality of the regulator and that is a problem too and she probably should be replaced.

And it's not only Tories who are sleazy is it? The whole ruddy lot of them are at it in one way or another.

Personally I would like to see a reduced House, salaries doubled and no outside earned income allowed.
Pay peanuts get monkeys. Double their wages halve their number. abolish all the local "authorities" and the house of lords, replace with elected chamber, top all the iffy exes. End of.
TBH though the problem here is that the MPs should not be the ones deciding on a suspension for one of their own. There should be an independent body of some kind with the power to do this. What you basically have is a Tory majority deciding the fate of a Tory. Now I am a Tory but I can see that is fatally flawed. Let the Lords decide or something.
Disgraceful. What do we have to do to shaft this Brexit supporting eco mania sceptic?
Is this the Con Crony Club looking after it's privileged members again.
And you gullible radicalised lot put them into power , shame on you.
// The other is over the impartiality of the regulator//
a.erm well the common law rule is that it has to touch the matter. In other words ( AB speak that is ! ) wife beating is irrelevant it the matter is parliamentary corruption

b. No one ( on the beeb ) has mentioned the separation of powers. This is why Trump used to say - "touch me not! I am the president" - same principle. Bill of Rights ( yup 1689 that is!) MPs are not subject to legal process. Now apparently they are saying - yes we are when it suits us ! Even from 1265 ( first modern parliament that is!) MPs were immune from suit to and fro their ( hard) work at Parliament.

Aitken really came a cropper ( did time for perjury) the last time an MP tried this on

The sum - three times his parliamentary salary - is not slight. Even I will moved to write to the PM on this subject - clear it up or else he will lose the next election
yeah goo-lee I agree - and I am a Tory !
you didnt merit the the answer removed because you were talking gully good sense did you?

Am not sure whether your assuming everyone else on here voted Tory or just those who disagree with some of your nonsense gulliver. (Seems to me you didnt even vote at all in Brexit or the last UK election) But on this one topic of Patterson am agreeing with you and Gromit and others that he should be suspended.
... meant to add I voted for Labour despite Corbyn and for Remain so dont include me as part of this 'radicalised lot'
he should be arrested and charged with corruption along the whole tory cabinet snouts in the trough everyone of them
Moneill45 @ 18.42 Spot on .
Randox is a very strange company. Based in Co Antrim. Paterson was NI Secretary originally. His (now ex-)wife is chairman of Aintree racecourse.
Home of the Grand National
Sponsored by none other than Randox

I add this merely for background colour ;-)
