If we're talking about true poverty, rather than relative poverty, then I find the figure of 4.2m extremely hard to believe.

I don't know, never lived off benefits as a lifestyle choice. I've always worked (not always hard, I must admit) and paid my way.

My son is autistic. I was told I could get benefits for him. Never claimed a penny.

He didn't need extra money, he needed love and support and good food in his belly.

Ummm quite right, much of what we are talking about now is in-work poverty. Those that are working but cannot afford the basics.

Must say I find the tone of much of this post very distasteful - judgemental to say the least. Married with two children - husband killed in a road accident - doesn't smoke (wacky baccy or any other kind) and doesn't drink. Recently lost her job because of Covid (company closed down). Currently living on benefits. Would you really deny her two children free meals during the school holidays? Until you know the full story, please don't judge!

If you are talking from personal experience, I am really sorry to hear that and there are honest decent people in our society, if not on AB. I hope you are getting the assistance you and your children need from friends and your local community at least.

He's not asking you to. He's raising awareness of an issue and trying to get the government to help prevent it. He's doing more than mpst.

Maggie, the sad thing is, a lot of people do begrudge them those meals.

It's funny how some people on this site are quick to accuse the "nasty left" for all the world's ills. This seems to me to be the opposite of that happening.
