Whether it bongs or not means nothing to those who will be out of earshot. So perhaps those who will be able to hear it - and who want it chiming out the 11 hours - should fund the half a million quid?
Crowdfunding for non-essential extras is an excellent idea.
a crowd funding has started
which when I last heard had reached just over £205

diddlydo, would you have complained if Labour had gained 43.5% of the vote and were given carte blanche to ruin the country? I'll answer that for you. No, you wouldn't.
Sounds a rip off to me. Did the estimators think it was an insurance job ?

Whilst not vital, we make an effort for thing much much less important. I see no reason to be niggardly over marking the return of our sovereignty and status as a nation.

As a portion of national wealth it's small and therefore should be covered by the treasury.
things
What about some mugs, T-shirts and special coins. A mere 1 million special 50pieces would cover it.
Oh no ... the cost of minting a mere 1 million special 50pieces ... arrhhhhh !!!!!! It's all too much. Perhaps we should have a whip round. We're far too poor to do that.
I thought that Boris wanted to unite the country? The sounding of the Great Clock is usually done to mark those occasions when the country as a whole are usually in harmony. Would the sounding of the bell on Jan 31st not rekindle some of the bitterness between Brexiteers and Remainers witnessed throughout the last 3 and 1/2 years?
^Has it gone away?
//emmie I voted NO in 1973,..//

It must have been very lonely at the polling station! The referendum was in 1975.
//The Tories only got 43.6% of the vote in the last election and yet they wield all the power. Call that "democracy"????//

Which party got more than that then?

//Everything wrong with that Naomi - they have the support of less than half of those who voted and yet have carte blanche to ruin the country any way they like.//

Virtually every government in recent times has assumed power with less than 50% of the vote. I’m sure you’d be making the same point if Labour won the election with only 43% of the vote.

//I'm well aware of how the system works but for anyone to maintain that it's democratic is just plain wrong!//

The Blair government was elected in 1997 with less than that (43.2%) then polled 41.4% in 2001 followed by 35.2% in 2005. The also had carte blanche for thirteen years. I didn’t hear any complaints about “democracy” then. Be careful what figures you complain about. Of course we could have a system like that in Italy which has had 69 governments in the 75 years since WW2.
The country should be in harmony. The insistence of some not to get behind the decision is to their own discredit. All should be overjoyed at the return of control.
It'd be great for a bong but it ain't worth the dosh, what's important is we are out of the EUSSR.
DIDDLY, which voting system would you use?
Diddly appears to have quickly and conveniently forgotten that Labour suffered the worst catastrophic defeat in General elections since the 1930s.
I think the whole thing was done T.I.C :0)
It seems like a waste of money, but crowdfunding it is ok, that way the people that are interested can make it happen.
How will it cost half a million anyway? As I understand it that's for re installing the clapper, which would have to be done at some point anyway. Can they not just get a bloke with ear defenders to wack it with a sledge hammer?
TTT apparently they would have to install a temporary floor and then remove the floor again to continue the work. I think crowdfunding is a good idea myself then those who want it will pay for it.
