None of the yoghurt-knitting armchair generals and barrack room lawyers changed their insightful opinions after the Panorama programme the other night then?

Didn't think so.......
I find it interesting that almost all of us are allowed to express an opinion, or hold a view on virtually anything (Islam excepted of course!) without either having direct personal experience, or equivalent academic knowledge, with the exception of the armed forces.

Some of those who post on here who have direct experience of the services post with an attitude so lofty it's impossible to see it with the naked eye!

They scoff at the very idea that anyone who has not personally seen the whites of the enemy's eyes is absolutely not entitled to venture even the most basic of views, and they should be ashamed of themselves for daring to express anything approaching an opinion.

I have said may times - usually in the face of such criticism, that I do not believe direct experience, or a high level of education, are, or should ever be, a bar on either putting forward a viewpoint or asking a question.

How else are people to learn anything?

It would be appreciated, certainly by me, if those with military experience could dial down the scorn and vilification visited on those of us who have not had military experience.

Absence of military experience does not equate to cowardice, stupidity, or membership of the exhaustively over-used 'Liberal Elite' - so maybe those who do know of what they speak can assist in educating those of us without similar experience, without making us feel like a bunch of cowardly stupid lentil steamers.

Thanks for your attention.
I find your use of the word 'lofty' to be supremely ironic.
I find your use of the term "supremely ironic" to be a bit lofty, JD.
Do you indeed? Ah, well, we can't all be masterchefs par excellence.
:-)
A-H
Well, you certainly got that off your chest.....and at 1 am.

I agree with you, but it has taken me years to realise that personal experience on AB, although respected in the outside world is of no major value on this site.
When i first joined AB, i thought that my expertise would be of some value....those with a medical degree, those with a Law or University degree. expertise in Building, Technology and other specific talents.......but it isn't, an experience is often looked down upon or decried or even devalued.

Depends want you want on AB Andy, a site for expertise which is valued or a "chit chat " forum which it has become.

I am afraid Andy that you will have to live with the site, which has developed.............of varying values.
andy-hughes, //...without making us feel like a bunch of cowardly stupid lentil steamers. //

I have no idea who 'us' is, but when another poster knows more about a subject than me, I do listen, I do learn, and I never feel like a cowardly stupid lentil steamer. If I don’t know, I’m always happy to say I don’t know. No one can know everything and there's nothing shameful or embarrassing in acknowledging that.
Except they refuse to accept that other people may have had similar experiences
Islay, if two or more people engaged in discussion had shared similar experiences there would be no disagreement.
Sqad, everyone here knows your expertise is of great value.

ditto clover
Tritto Clover and Murray.
I love it when an expert posts and we can have confidence in what we are being told. Never to old to learn and I just don't get why some people resent it. Says more about them I think.
Quaditto
cheenk- quitto ! [ ditto times 5 for slow readers ]
piddy it is not queeen - quitto innit ?

linguists can say what has happened here. Di- is mistaken for (2) altho that should be bi - and so three (£) is tri - or treeto and so on to quadritto.

When i first joined AB, i thought that my expertise would be of some value....those with a medical degree, those with a Law or University degree. expertise in Building, Technology and other specific talents....sqad

O stop feeling sorry for yourself sqad - people often follow your advice blindly ( talking about myself as I am partially sighted )
and stop early morning drinking - you posted at 0452 as high as kite I dont doubt ....limbering up for your morning clinic ....

Years ago it was quality on the internet and how one couldnt judge it and now it is more black and white - alternative or fake news
( so the judgement has moved from a spectrum to all-or-none or binary as they say nowadays )

and yes there are troof tellers and BS on AB as there are on any other site
troof tellers ( pressed send when I meant to press caps)

you for medicine - Chris BC on wills - Barmaid on law a part called equity (and all else) - jim on maff and mathematical logic [ o god their was a thread where someone said his arguments werent logical and he nearly had a melt-down ( thx to Lady Astor to Bertrand Russell)]

we had a criminal QC who died pretty quig from ca bile ducts.

so it is the old old problem of hearing someone saying
" I'm right on this one!" and for the listener to decide if they are.
as Pres Trump might say - "so true! there are some bad bad people out there - all listening to me...."
Peter-Pendant

" but it has taken me years to realise that personal experience on AB, although respected in the outside world is of no major value on this site. "

Perhaps that WAS a bit OTT what i should have written was " of LIMITED value on AB. My answer was really to AH, who was questioning the attitude of the "specialists" to the opinions of the "amateurs." A valid point, but my point was that the "experts" on here often get short measure in an attempt to subvert their "expert" opinions.....not all ABers by far, but many, more than you would believe, in that eternal quest to get back at posters for personal reasons.
sqad - calm yourself !

[ and have a read of the judgement where his conviction is varied - the judge did NOT offer manslaugher as an alternative. It was not his duty but WAS a choice. ]

and as for your feeling that there arent enough Abers saying " yes o great one ! you are quite right again !"
well I feel that as well !
( about me)
...and you have the nerve to berate Sqad for posting high as a kite!
