A GRANDAD'S TALE

When I was just a youngster,
Sat on my Grandad's knee,
I asked why we remembered?
Here's what he said to me.
Having gone to war my boy,
Words just cant describe,
The joy and guilt I felt inside,
For coming home alive.
The boys I went to school with,
All joined at the same time,
We thought it an adventure,
And together we'd be fine.
The reality was different
As we found out from the start,
Within the first week three had died,
and many more were hurt.
You see it in the movies,
One shot and then you’re dead,
But most of them died slowly
Screaming as they bled
As my Grandad told his tale,
His eyes filled up with tears,
And that's why we still remember,
Even after all these years.
