Went to bed - I'm an hour ahead of UK- just looked and my! has the thread grown. First back to etymology, jno. 'matr' is also in matron and matrimony and does not necessarily mean bearing of children.
Secondly, I strongly object to small number of highly vociferous 'progressives' seeking to force their new definition of marriage onto the rest of us. A minority in and outside of government are misappropriating a word which owes its value to centuries of use within a variety of religious traditions, and I protest that they have no right to do so.

In a nutshell when i went up to med school, i shared digs with a mate and the first night, he got into bed with me. It didn't work, i wasn't interested and moved into Hall of Residence. He married heterosexually as did i and we both had children via the maternal method.........that's it mikey.....

So you know everyones personal circumstances that posts views on Gay marriage contrary to yours do you? How do you know my OH is a male? I may live with a woman in a Gay relationship, my son or daughter may be gay?
Just because someone is against or could not care a less about Gay marriage does not mean they are hetro, I know at least one lesbian couple who think Gay marriage is unnecessary and a publicity stunt for hard core Gay rights supporters, not all Gay people have the same opinion, they are individuals.

However, all of gay people I have discussed the matter with [and I respectfully suggest that the figures I can present will trump yours many times over] are in favour of full equality with regard to Marriage, even if they have no inclination to get married themselves.

There seems to be an assumption, vocalized by you both, that marriage equality is something being foisted on the general population by gay activists. Is that a fair summary of what you believe?
That being the case, then every poll conducted over the past few years should show that only about 0.3% of the population is in favour of marriage equality (I'm using 3% as being the figure for gay people in the UK, with 10% of that 3% being 'hard core Gay rights supporters').
Polls have not shown that.
What they have shown is that a majority are actually in favour of marriage equality.
I suspect that many more people than we think are in the 'I don't mind one way or the other...so why not' category.

jackthehat, I was not trying to trump you I was merely pointing out that your statement about posters on AB was possibly not entirely true as you do not personally know their circumstances. I'm sure you know personally hundreds of Gay people who have strong views on Gay marriage but that was not the subject of my reply.
I agree with Sqad that the word bigot is thrown around a little too much when discussing opposition to marriage equality.
However, I understand why people use it - it's because when push comes to shove, when you get down to the nitty gritty of why many people object to it, their opposition comes down to an emotional reaction to change, rather than a considered response to change.
