Ignore me Tilly. I'm feeling a tad delicate.
Poor Gromit has reached a new low - scraping the barrel in a pitiful attempt to accuse Maggie of starting the Falklands war!
Lets blame Karl Marx for all the troubles of the 20th century, shall we?
Mrs T hasn't been in power for many years, and i reckon that Blair taking us into a war no one wanted, telling us that WMD existed, lying to the electorate about it and causing hundreds of thousands of death far outstrips anything she did. So couldn't we at least have some balance here.
imo, Margaret Thatcher was the finest prime minister we have had since Churchill - and on the subject of poll tax - that was the fairest way of council taxation possible -
and perhaps if people actually looked at Council Tax now, and how it has shot through the roof, where you get half of the services you did before, for a whole lot more, and tell me if i am wrong, because that is exactly what our council has done. suggest perhaps Mrs T, who was under advisement about the Poll Tax was right. Riots ensued, and she finally lost her job, but the fact remains what we have now if far worse.
I can't see any difference between then and now regarding the council.
Venator,

If you go out and leave the front door and windows wide open, don't be surprised if you get burgled.

An early cut in her first parliament was to retire HMS Endurance which had been protecting the islands. Not because the threat from Argentina had diminished but to save a small amount of money. We left our property vunerable and instead of saving a few pounds it ended up costing us hundreds of millions of pounds in sank ships, downed aircraft and weaponry.

Of course the Government of the day were to blame.
Happy Birthday Maggie.
Our last strong Prime Minister ..Bunch of wimps ever since and God help us if that Miliband gets in.
She had more cojones than any other PM I've seen in my lifetime!
Belated Happy B'day Mrs. T.

Like when she signed the Single European Act in 1986. The Irish and the Danes had a referendum on it, but like Heath before her, she signed up without such vote from the people.
Some of the disgusting and offensive comments made by members of the 'caring Left' is testimonial indeed of the levels they are prepared to sink to, even going as far as wanting a person dead.

One may not agree with an democratic elected politician or their politics, but it is only the lower end of humanity that would wish a frail and ageing fellow country man or woman dead, regardless of their politics.

Some of you are sick.
usual lefty cobblers about the falklands from gromit. All caused by scrapping an icebreaker?! right oh! That really put off the Junta! didn't it. Happy Birthday Maggie wish you were here today. More balls than all the liliy livered wets of all sides. Oh and It's Mrs Thatcher to you bayboy.
And then of course there was Denis 'The Real Menace'.
>>>As a coalminer's daughter, I shall open a bottle to celebrate

Labour were already shutting down coal mines before the Tories just continued it.

And why do "lefties" hate Thatcher but you never hear them having a go at people like "Red Robbo" who was a union boss at British Leyland and took them out on strike if a manager sneezed near him.

It is because of people like Red Robbo that British Leyland / Rover went out of business.

These type of union bosses did untold harm to UK business and the country needed Thatcher to stand up to them.

Thanks friedgreentomato - oops sorry, wrong Maggie!!
cliff stopped having birthdays years ago
Thatcher haters are blinded VHG, they cannot see that she was necessary. Anyone who cleans up the sh1te is doomed to be hated while those that follow enjoy the benefits. As soon as they became PM both Blair and Brown invited the Iron Lady round for a one to one. If even Labour leaders can see her greatness, perhaps one day even the loony left might.
Some people on here are too young to remember the "Winter of Discontent" in 1978-1979 when the country was "run" by a Labour goverment.

The country was broke and basic services like burying the dead and collecting the rubbish was just not happening.

Those who lived through it know how awful it was to be in the UK at the time with unions having lots of power and going on strike after strike over the most trivial matter.

(if you watch the film Carry on at your Convenience while a comedy it gives you a flavour of these trivial strikes during the 1970s)

As a country we were broke and the laughing stock of Europe.

Thatcher was EXACTLY what we needed at the time and the reason Blair and Brown were able to take over a country in such a good financial state is because of all the work Thatcher did.

Of course Blair / Brown between then managed to bankrupt the country again, so the Tories have to come in again to sort out the mess.

Before anyone has a go at Margaret Thatcher read the Winter of Discontent article on wikiperdia and see how bad things were at that time.

As a hand-wringing, liberal leftie loonie, I would just like to say Happy Birthday to Magaret Thatcher.

I don't agree with most of her politics, but that doesn't mean I have to hate her or wish her dead.
the British were negotiating on transferring sovereignty over the Falklands to Argentina. This somehow gave the Argentines the impression London was ready to give them up.

Apparently this wasnt the case; so you can only say it was a massive failure of British diplomacy, since it completely misled the other party about what was at stake. If Britain had made clear it had no intention of giving the islands up (and a good way of doing this would have been not negotiating on it), Argentina would have been unlikely to invade in the first place.

The withdrawal of the Endurance just added to the foolishness of Britain's approach. The war could have been easily avoided
