/// The current syllabus, previously attacked for being too politically correct, will be scrapped with the intention of giving children a deeper understanding of history. ///

/// Secondary school children aged between 11 and 14 will move on to 50 wider topics about the modern world, including Soviet-U.S. relations and how they shaped the world, as well as the influence of immigration on British society. ///

As well as the influence of immigration on British society

Now that should be the real test, if they have managed fully to get rid of 'political correctness'.

What would you like the new syllabus to say about the influence of immigration, avoiding political correctness, aog ?
FP, it is wellnown that the teaching profession is full of lefty libral types. They are the champions of political correctness so it is unlikely that particular topic will be taught openly.
Still like to know what people would like to see taught about immigration though and what, if anything, is taught about it now and which is tainted by political correctness.
200 great Britons, have there been that many?

How exciting to learn the works of Athelstan. Spent his time fighting immigrants, I see. Sounds like Tory political correctness to me.
AOG

If you were in charge of re-write the national curriculum, how would you rid it of political correctness?

What would you teach children about immigration, British foreign policies post-World War II, and especially politics in the 70s and 80s?
jno, //200 great Britons, have there been that many? //

The link reads ‘200 key British figures’ – not ‘200 great Britons’ – although, of course, there have been many more than 200 great Britons. I seem to recall you saying that you are a non-indigenous inhabitant of these shores. Perhaps a Citizenship test might benefit you.
Actually I find the air-brushing of history quite frightening. Ever read Orwell's '1984'?
Good news on the boot production figures Naomi. :)

Am I a left liberal then?
Yes indeed, Douglas. ;o)

I do wish you'd learn to control your dislike of the British jno. We can't be all that bad - we let you stay after all.
youngmafbog, you've been reading the DM too much if that's your considered opinion. I can only assume you've not sat in a Staffroom and listened to opinions, don't allow the NUT et al views to represent those of the rank and file.
History was very poorly taught when I was at school 35 years ago. I see little evidence that it is any better now. The problem is that it is a subject that almost invites political meddling from both left and right leaning Governments. This latest bit of meddling will not make teaching of History better in the slightest, it is just more misguided tinkering

Not sure how political correctness comes into it. If by that you mean children are taught about the slave trade then rightly so. It may have been a stain and embarrassing, but it happened and children should know about it.

What do you wish me to do, enter a thesis on the subject?

What would be the good it would be so long that the majority would not read the whole of it, and if they did they still wouldn't be swayed away from their own preconceived ideas.
do you live in Britain jno? I assume you don't as you hate us so much but wanted to clarify.
zebo, I thought that's what the unions did, or are supposed to do, represent the rank and file?
Not like you, aog. You normally manage to get your ideas across in a few sentences. No need to write a thesis; just give us a few key points. You can give a few pointers to what is wrong and what you'd have pupils taught, can't you?
