some industries that had had their day, were not productive, were already being consigned to the scrap heap. That people are their own worse enemies because they want cheap goods whilst moaning all the while they are not British made. Do you buy British goods now, will you pay top pounds for your car, Hi Fi, i Pad, TV, no you won't.
You shop around like we always have for the best deals, i see nothing wrong with that. Coal was an outgoing industry, already downsizing because many people were no longer using coal, it was also a major pollutant. As for nationalised industry we see what happened when Railways were nationalised, no overall investment, old rolling stock, trains cancelled all the time. as someone who lived through much of those times i can safely say that i am glad we have moved on from that.
<Not much dignity having to pay gawd knows how much out in benefits either is there out of tax payers. >

No

so not much to choose between any of the options; subsidy for those engaged in activities that no longer have purpose whichever way you cut it.

Short of having a magic wand or turning everybody else's coal into sand i'm not sure what would be better.

at least benefits, re-training and help with relocation has helped some to switch to jobs that are viable
Ok em and Zeuhl, You both have different opinions on Thatcher to me and I respect that, but I'm afraid that you won't change my opinion of her.
Maggie also smashed the print unions - with the help of newspaper proprietor Eddie Shah. And he is now in the news charged with six counts of raping a girl under the age of 16.

He's going to have a big fall.
Ah yes sir.p, I had forgotten about that sleaze bag.
Ah Yes

Fleet street before Shah

I too remember the good old days when one union man could collect several pay packets in fictitious names for work he hadn't done
Thatcher was a dictator who armed the police to the teeth to beat the miners at will . She used the police as a military unit.
The police beat then on the picket line...beat them in their gardens and even beat them in their homes ......

Images like this one will always be my overriding memory of her time in office.

"Despite the photo's arresting qualities and the fact it now has iconic status, a report by the Campaign for Press and Broadcasting Freedom said it was only published in one of 17 national newspapers at the time - which they say suggests reporting bias"

When Thatcher first became PM ,one of her first acts was to compensate the owner of a certain oil company ,in Burma ,that had been nationalised at the time of the coup ,the amount was 100 million pounds of tax payers money ,any person on here that knows who owned that company that she ,compensated???
Do tell us BayBoy.
is that any worse than squandering billions of taxpayers money on overseas aid, denying many British people the rights to good health care, which incidentally most have paid into. If you know the company why not just say, get it all off your chest.
