Rather than say anything about her time as PM I prefer to say something about her as a local MP... Every christmas she hosted a party for local old people and even my almost communist mother in law said she was lovely... and would not be bothered by other issues during the time she spent there. I also know people who worked at the houses of parliament who found her...

I considered the poll tax fairer than the one in place now, the problem was no cap was set so the local councils went mad - probably thought it was a way of clearing their debts.
"The surprising thing today for me was Peter Mandleson's comments on Radio 4, speaking so favourably of her, that Britain did need the economic restructuring, that the Unions "were out of control" (his words), and that her legacy was the political framework all parties work within today, the culmination for him defined as Thatcherism. "

All totally predictable. What WAS interesting was his extraordinary revelation about what Thatcher said to him the only time they ever met, on his becoming Northern Ireland Secretary, along the lines of
"Good luck young man. Don't trust the Irish, they're all liars"
And people expect a eulogy?
Count me out sorry.
The "ordinary working man" DID fight back. There was an 11 per cent swing to her from the skilled working class and a 9 per cent swing from the unskilled when she was elected first. They were fighting back against "old Labour".

Exactly Brenden, why shouldn't houses with more than just the home-owners in residence also pay their share of the poll tax, the trouble was the fact that where there were just a couple living in the house they were expected to pay double what they previously paid.

A much fairer way would have been for the main couple to have paid what they previously paid and then for every additional 'wage earner' in the house to have paid a single persons share.
Margaret Thatcher, who put the great back in Britain. God Bless.
i hope that she is reunited with her beloved Denis, RIP Margaret Thatcher.
Amen to that em ! Glad things went well yesterday....
so am i.
