Never smile? Standard confident stride down the runway, half turn, pause, stride back, and a look thoughout that says "I hate this job. Will it never end?"

well, whenever i walk 20 feet and back again i can say i get terribly excited about it either ... it gets a bit samey...
as others say - they are not there to 'perform', they are not the star, they are just an animated mannequin.
i would imagine the designer gives some kind of uinstruction as to their level of input and performance - depending on the clothes, some want the models to dance about and laugh and interact etc, others want seriousness etc

It depends on the designers. Some want their models to have serious faces so that the clothes will be taken seriously. Others like Betsy Johnson just let their models have fun!
Some designers want whole performances from the models. Alexander McQueen's shows were brilliant! A good example was his 2001 S/S Asylum show. The models had bandaged heads and everything :-)
I miss him as a designer :-(
