Bought some in M&S yesterday which was reduced in price because it was near the sell-by date. It had a salty taste and a texture similar to Edam. It that the way it should be?

No cheese expert but that's how I recall it. Similar to Edam.
Did you cook it?

I've never tried it but know its referred to as squeaky cheese.
It usually doesn't have much taste at all until you cook it. Here in Greece, we normally have it grilled on a bed of tomatoes or peppers. I love the way it squeaks when you chew it.
yes it is, though griddle it quickly to cook rather than eat it cold sandy, we have it seared on the bbq

No. Just had a bit in a sandwich. Bland and salty isn't a taste I'd look for again.
Try and cook some.
it's not"eating" cheese, and it's different again hot sandy, makes a nice kebab ingredient
It's lovely grilled or barbequed.
Not an eating cheese ? Didn't realise that when I've bought it, ate it as it was, and liked it. But it's a cheese, what's not to like.

Mmmmmm salty taste. (To ber honest I don't recollect thinking it was salty, but there again I like salt.)
lol og, my bads, I meant most people, for choice, wouldn't slice it up and bung it on a cracker - though like you, I'd cheerfully gnaw lumps of any cheese

cook it on both sides sandy

grill lightly and have with good pitta bread and Greek Tzatziki
next time if there is one, look for the traditional ones, not bought from M&S or supermarket, i find there is a lot of difference.
Has to be grilled.

Em10, I don't think there will be a next time.
Afternoon tea will be cheese on toast until it's used up.
Nice grilled with lemon and chilli and basil. the official cheese of cyprus.
I love it and as I am working in Cyprus next month will be eating lots.
Have a keo for me grasscarp. :)
as others have said you have to lightly grill it then sprinkle little bit of lemon over, it is lovely
it is one of my favourites, but then i have a thing for cheese... x
Its one of my favourites too, but it HAS to be grilled until it browns. (I use a piece of foil and enjoy listening to it squeek as it cook)

Its lovely warm with a salad or in a sandwich with grilled peppers and green leaves. Personally I wouldn't eat it on toast but that's just me. If you do have it with toast, cook it seperately to the toast rather than grill it on the toast - it won't melt like cheddar.
