Vegetarian Fish & Chips!

I've often remarked about how vegetarian options in restaurants have to resemble their carnivorous counterparts (sausages, burgers, etc.) But now I've seen the lot. Glancing at the menu of a well known chain I saw "Vegetarian Fish & Chips". To ensure I was not going completely barmy, I looked at the description: "Hand battered Halloumi, Chips, Mushy peas and Tartare sauce"

How long has Halloumi cheese been a variety of fish? Why don't they just advertise it as "Cheese and Chips"? Is the world going completely mad?

Life's too short to ponder such things.
I can't agree, NJ. I just wish chefs would learn to serve my steak so that it resembled an artichoke.
Chips and cheese is for the lower orders, New Judge, can't have Tarquin and Felicity chowing down on pleb food.

Deep fried salty cheese, health food of the gods. :-)
Crazy, halloumi is a lovely veggie option anyway. To some extent I prefer to have veggie food in wholly vegetarian restaurants as so often the offerings in omnivore eateries are really uninspiring.
Lacto vegetarians eat real fish, not fried greek rubber.
you have to be a pesco vegerarian to eat fish. Fish are not made of milk or vegetables.
I made a Plasticine fish once.
Fried manouri cheese is lovely drizzled with honey.
A friend of mine is a veggie so, whenever we're out and about together, I have to keep an eye out for veggie restaurants (or non-veggie ones with plenty of veggie options).

'Veggie fish and chips' seems to occur on almost every veggie menu these days, so it's certainly not unusual.

For example it's included on the menu of one of the two veggie pubs in this area:

The food there is superb but the 'fish and chips' wouldn't be my own choice.
//Hand battered Halloumi//

Says it all really.
Henceforth anyone who is being a......you know what. Is hand battered.
Henceforth anyone who is being a......Cheese?
I thought that a lot of veggies would happily eat fish; it was only meat they objected to.
Isn't fish a sort of meat?
Until now I had never heard of halloumi nor seen it in the shops.
Try it sliced and lightly fried ID.

It's nice, but strangely it squeaks as you bit it.

IMO meat is the flesh of an animal and a fish is definitely an animal, so I don't go along with the idea that it isn't meat.
Some would argue that meat is the flesh of a mammal, which a fish isn't.
It shows a distict lack of commitment to the cause, dressing up a look at me lifestyle as normal, everyday but allegedly eschewed food.
