What Should I Have Done?

I went shopping today. I had my mask on and also leather gloves because I feel the cold. I went into a shop and was asked to sanitise my hands. I explained that I had got gloves on, and the assistant said I should take my gloves off, sanitise my hands and put my gloves back on. I felt totally confused. I suggested that sanitise my gloves while I had them on, but was told that wasn’t an option. Any thoughts please? I left the shop quietly as I didn’t want to have an argument.
I haven’t been out much as I’ve just turned 80 so have been very careful. What should I have done.

Ignored the fool.
I would have left too. How stupid of the shop!
I would just have sanitised my hands to humour the assistant who isn't paid to think. It costs you nothing, does you no harm and keeps everybody happy.
Just what you did, left the shop.
Just do what you were told.....it takes less than 60 secs.
I would have removed gloves, used sanitiser, shopped, sanitised again as I was leaving, put gloves back on...in fact, that's what I do.
Leaving gloves on all the time isn't a good idea...the gloves will be just as "tainted" as your hands would have been...and you can't sanitise leather gloves.
Poor staff training that leaves those in customer facing situations to face the flak, I too would have slipped off my gloves, sanitised and put them back on.
Interesting one, Helly. What you should have done is up to you. Me? I'd have removed the gloves, sanitised my hands, put back the gloves, sanitised them and moved on after a little wink at the assistant. I would have added smile sweetly but that doesn't work these days......... ;-)....except on here...x

What you were asked to do, or leave as you did.
agree - the assistant just misunderstood or was given the wrong instructions/guidence , probly scared of being told off for not getting peopel to sanatize. You should of been told to either sanatize hands and take gloves off or sanatize the gloves while your wearing them
I have been wearing my leather gloves, the last few weeks, when I go into a shop. I always wash/sanitize my hands before putting them on. I sometimes get Raynauds in my fingers, so it's important I keep them on. No one has ever said anything to me, and if they did, I would ignore them!
just done what you were asked, while smiling to yourself at the silliness of some shop assistants. Or left the shop if they didn't sell anything you needed. But there's no arguing with clots.
I'd have taken my gloves off and sanitised my hands, then put my gloves back on and sanitised my gloves. That is not something I would regard as an insult or imposition on me or my freedom. It would have satisfied the assistant, who was trying to do the job (s)he had been told to do. I don't feel the need to give people a hard time just to assert my right to do what I want. I wouldn't have left the shop, as that is cutting off my nose to spite my face.
That's what I would have done.

Thanks everyone. I think I will do that in future. As Sqad says it only takes a minute. Happy Christmas everyone xx
So people think that it's fine to rub alcohol-based gel on leather gloves to "sanitise" them...won't work and ruins gloves!
I don't think the assistant was a clot; they will have been told to ensure that anyone entering the shop should be asked to sanitise their hands and that's exactly what they were doing.
quite possibly, bhg, and indeed the shop may have experience of shoppers taking off their gloves to handle goods before buying them. I withdraw my accusation.
what should you have done
sanitise your hands and
got on with the job in hand - - shopping !

no gingebee, a think we all agree the best thing scientificly is to take off gloves, sanatize hands and leave gloves off , but if she felt she had to wear gloves then its understandable for shop to say she either can't come in and possably infect baskets/goods with her gloves or she must put sanatizer gel on gloves even tho it may not be good for the gloves
I'd have left. Why should we smile sweetly and do what we are told when it's barking in the first place? If shops are going to put their staff on the door as quasi-police at least we should expect them to be sensible.
