I can’t even respond to the last poster there to ask her to mind her manners. Since there’s no message from the Editorial staff I assume that this has been done on the whim of a mod. Please sort it out, Ed. When discussions are halted in full flow for no apparent reason it becomes a waste of time contributing at all. The Islam thread went the same way … twice!

As far as I'm aware, this post breaks no rules.... but this fairly recent practice really is becoming very frustrating to the more serious posters here, especially if they've taken the time and trouble to research complex issues.

Thanks for your attention.

To be quite honest I am surprised that this thread has lasted so long. Bet it will be gone before midnight.
Of course I do. Especially when it is waved about and claimed as 'research'.

I hope the owner / shareholders of Answerbank are aware of what's going on, and be aware that the mods/eds could be endangering all that lovely advertising revenue. Just a thought.
For those of us who have been around for a decade or even longer, this site is in clearly in decline, as a direct result of over-moderation.

I agree with SD - a thread should be removed in its entirety or offending posts should be removed, but closing threads willy nilly is just going to cause too much consternation and will lead to people not bothering to contribute to serious threads any more.

jackthehat, carry on if you must.
I think you overestimate the importance of the arguments between the usual suspects, Theland - only those involved actually give a flying ferret.

The main traffic is Quizzes, Crosswords and Puzzles - if that falls off then heads will roll - but the last figures vouchsafed by 'the management' (last year sometime I think) indicated that there was no problem.
Answerbank is not the only place I can go to discuss stuff, and Amal sure others also have sites they can go to if this one becomes unwelcoming.
We could all attract advertising elsewhere and I hope the advertisers are aware of this.
Oh well that's ok then.
Been here since 2006 and certainly not as good.
I agree that some of the things I used to enjoy have become polluted with pointless posturing by pillocks - but that does often seem to be the case with Social Media Forums as they are withered by age - but AB is still better than most unmoderated (wild west) alternatives.
Question Author
sunny-dave, I’ve no complaints about the site per se, but the attitude and activity of some of the moderators requires serious attention. Even if quizzes and puzzles is the bread and butter of the site, the rest must be valuable enough to work to retain. No?
This is being discussed by The British Bowel Movement.
I agree (possibly for the first time) with Naomi - I think my suggestion for tempering the thread closing powers of Mods is at least a starting point?
I don't even remotely agree with you about the "Islam" thread, which I suppose goes to show the point. I'd have deleted it if I had the chance. Moderation is subjective, and therefore so is complaining about it.
So if we were all sitting in the pub having a discussion, what would upset you and how would you deal with it? Get somebody barred out?
Question Author
Jim, that gives me the impression that you'd close other threads too simply because you, personally, disagree with them. I think we have a few mods around who feel the same way - and therein, I believe, lies the problem.
If I owned the pub I might kick out the disruptive punters. If I were merely a member I might either complain, seethe silently, or walk out, depending on how serious it was.

These meta-debates are getting fairly tiresome. AB has its house rules, more people than you are giving credit for are breaking them.
Question Author
Jim, People who break the rules may have their posts removed but this isn't about breaking rules.
I'd never shut down a debate just because I disagreed with it. So no, you've got the wrong impression as usual.
Is the "Islam" thread which was closed Theland's "Telling The Truth About Islam"?

If so, why would you want to close it, Jim? What's the site rule which you think was being broken by Theland's question?

I thought Naomi was talking about the Judderman thread.
