It's not actually me that's changing my name, but my step-daughter who is reverting to her maiden name.
Not sure whether that constitutes a good or bad reason!

Goofy, always photocopy your passport when sending it away, you could have taken copy as back up, same as always carry your repeat prescription from your GP in case they query any meds you r carrying.
Aside from the arbitrary requirements of airlines, you don't need a passport to cross the border between Ireland and the UK whether you are a UK/Irish citizen or not. Such a rule would be unenforceable, if you think about it.
A Pilots Licence would be best......
