ita vero, Boxy. sine qua non...
Oh, for my first year Latin lessons! Things had to be so simple at the start that all sentences comprised regular first declension nouns and regular first conjugation verbs. Hence the delight of having to translate such sentences as, "Why dost thou hasten into the woods with the farmer, O Queen?" and," Dost thou love the poet in the woods with his spear, O Queen?"

Mamya, that is just the sweetest. Thank you very much xxx
We had to translate pages of Livy....
So did we, but not in our first week!
LOL, true mike - the first few weeks were spent in declensions....

All I can remember is

amo
amas
amat
I remember it well. Caecilius, Matella and Quintus, Grumio the slave. De Bello Gallico, the funeral games etc...
Can you remember books in which suddenly an ode would be missing from sequence or loads or asterisks would appear? The answer was invariably a) that ode possesses no real artistic merit, or b) certain fragments have been lost in antiquity. The true answer, which no master would give you was c) it's a load of filth, totally unsuited to the ears of young men of 16/17.
Question Author
I had completely forgotten about that mike :)

I wish they'd bring Latin back into schools, it might give the text-speak generation a wake up call to the beauty of language.
