And of course the gospels recounting the story were around a bit before the catholic Church, and it is only called Lent in English speaking Countries.
dot so did you not eat any dairy products or meat ?
As dictated by the pope and the vatican?

Prior to 1965, Catholics could not eat meat, cheese, eggs, and other dairy products during the entire time of Lent; but since the Vatican II doctrine they must avoid meat only on Ash Wednesday and Fridays during lent.

Or was that a mainly catholic tradition during lent?

You were young before 1965 im guessing?
Catholics abiding by meatless Fridays in favour of fish kept the fish & chip trade bouyant in the 60s.
No as mrs O said as well, it a general Christian tradition, it is celebrated by many arms of Christendom including some Protestants, and just becase some Protestants do not celebrate it does not mean it is not in their teachings also many other branches of Christianity celebrate lent, not just catholics.

You seem to be forgetting that catholics are simply a branch of Christendom.
Catholic beliefs are totally alien to protestants .
Especially the pope.

As i said ive never met a protestant in scotland thats celebrated lent.

if there are any out there then speak up.

As i said it was generally looked on as something catholics did

as i said earlier protestants dont have mass dont go to confession , dont answer to rome or the vatican and dont see the pope as their leader on earth.

so both christian

but as similar as saying men and women are human , but they arent the same.

Are they?
No they are not the same... but thank you for confirming my point... they are still both human.

any how...

Theres a big orthodox following in Tenerife so it seems, why not go and see them and tell them they don't celebrate lent....
BTW they do because they are are christians, just not of the catholic variety .
Protestants or Church of England broke away from Rome in Henry VIII time for the purpose of allowing divorce into Christianity. The English Crown was then as head of church and since Scotland was under Crown rule, it applied there too as in Wales & N.Ireland.
Maybe googling Church of Scotland together with the word Lent would clarify the Scottish stance.
Theres a latge catholic following inntenerife hence why its carneval nite tonight in santa cruz.

from the roman catholic church which spread the tradition to southamerica .

not the protaestant church.

ive now reAD ENOUGH ON WEBSITES TO CONFIRM ITS A MAINLY CATHOLIC TRADITION CELEBRATED NOWADAYS BY SOME PROTESATNT CHURCHES BUT EVEN THEN STILL NOT TO THE EXYTENT THE CATHOLICS DO REGARDING NOT EATING CERTAIN FOODS

TAMBO CHURCH OF ENGLAND STARTED SO HENRY COULD GET REMARRIED.

MMM

HARDLY A GOOD FOUNDATION FOR A CHURCH OR RELIGION IS IT?

A BASSTARDISED VERSION OF ROMAN CATHOLICISM I RECKON.
even at that dot theres the free church of scotland too

they dont let folk work on a sunday still
and have other bizarre ideas
we had pancakes though
and not just on a tuesday

if that helps?

though i dont remember jesus eating pancakes

Bit late Leg....but is their a webcam to watch the fun there?

Catholic following there is the spanish.....they're very pious.
the majority of the canarians are catholic

the spanish killed off the original inhabitants

ill look for a webcam

brb
sorry tambo

the ones i can get are all in darkness

but i did try
I like lent as I am on another diet - unfortunately it has coincided with me going to the shop for a huge bar of chocolate...
I can't speak for the rest of the world but when Christianity came to England, it came in two forms, Celtic and Roman Catholic. Both observed Lent, and both feasted on shrove tuesday. Ive never heard of a denomination that doesnt observe any of these events, pretty big on the list of things JC did.
Like pancakes if thats ok!!!
