when EFTPOS came in ( 'came in' that is) it was looked on as a cash cow - 25p per transaction

and um didnt take off....

(electronic fund transfer at point of sale)

I always have some bangers on me, you can use old and new systems.

Cash is a pain to me . And I get 1 % to 3%  cashback with my cards

I didn't post it, but I would have!  People need to understand that once everything takes place on card transactions - the authorities know exactly where you are and what you are spending your money on.  In France you are charged for your debit card and this will happen here if we are hooked on it.

We've just had legislation forbidding people from buying cigarettes, because it is 'bad for you'.  I.E. removing personal autonomy.  What's the betting that alcohol or sugar will be next in line?  If you only have a card - you can be stopped from buying something 'unhealthy'.  OK, rant over..... but the door is now open to massive forms of control.

Cash is absolutely necessary in life. Hard cash means you can appreciate what you have to spend and budget accordingly.  No - to all you whizz-kids who keep a mental maths calculation of expenditure, most of us need the physicality of cash.

Example: Grandchild A - got pocket money in cash, learned to budget, now at Uni. & works in hols to meet anticipated needs.

Grandchildren B & C - got cards loaded with their pocket money.............completely lost, always running out of cash and  whining.

Cash benefits everybody.  Something I feel strongly about; not that you'd guess, of course.  :)

Well said,jourdain. ^^^

Jourdain, we never use cash and can see at any time exactly when and where we have spent money.

Shops accept statements as proof of purchase when I can't find the receipt.

The banks refund losses if my cards are misused (try that if you lose your wallet or have it stolen). S.75 gives me  extra protection if a business goes bust or their is a problem with my goods/services just because I paid with a credit card.

I get cash back for using my cards.

I'm alright Jack is hardly the basis of monetary policy and wealth distribution.

Anyone supporting additional monitiring of the citizen by the State is messing things up for future generations and their freedom. If there is one thing the world's tyranies should indicate it's how bad an idea that course of action is.

What's the betting that alcohol or sugar will be next in line?

the chances of alcohol being banned in France are quite low. Betting, however...

I am a support worker for Adults with LD . They get a certain amount of allowance per week as they live in care.

so we choose to go bowling 🎳 at our local bowling alley sorry they say it's card only. We go to a pub they like sorry card only.

so let's go to McDonald's oh you have to use a computerised menu which they don't understand so I'm trying to sort everyone out plus work out how they can pay by cash.
we went on a day trip and was told the cafe was card only .

im taking them to London and told transport is card only.

when will society realise that the lovely people I support are not being able to continue with their independence.

please bring back a cash society.

Hannah, you have opened my eyes to a different world.

Thank heavens that there are people like you.

I need cash.......to pay my paper boy and window cleaner, buy the Big Issue, put something into a charity tin etc etc

I pay my window cleaner by bank transfer

This is not about what you can do now (with 3% cashback, discounts, etc.) it's about what they will do once they've got you fully dependent and killed off cash - then they'll start screwing you with charges and there will be nothing you can do about it.

Don't say I didn't warn you.

One bank levies charges, another undercuts them.

I remember the bank charges of the 60s for operating a current account. It certainly was not free to issue a cheques

I always use cash for everyday shopping. If a venue says card only I boycott it.

I carry a bit of cash on me - there are a few independent cafes locally with a sign saying cash preferred. Otherwise I prefer to use a card, but recognise that not everyone can keep track of their expenditure electronically.

Yeah, FB is going to have you signed up for all kinds of nonsense soon!!

//Jourdain, we never use cash and can see at any time exactly when and where we have spent money.  //

Well arnt we the mighty smug one?

Sadly many people are not able to and get into all sorts of financial difficulties.

Both cash and cards have a place in life and for once I am in total agreement with Canary @23:39.  I spent decades working for Banks I know what they are capable of.
