... and other areas.  Quite a biggie by all accounts but no reports of loss of life as far as I can tell.  Can someone please post a link for me.  I'm unable to do it at the moment.

Thanks scorpiojo.

You are welcome.

There's a really tall, skinny skyscraper that I watched go up over the years on NY.  I always thought "God, I wouldn't like to be in that if there was an earthquake!"

I have read, on a German website, that no injuries or damage have been reported.

There was an earthquake of that magnitude in my home town in 2002 - the scrappy built 1960s tower blocks weren't affected and really all I felt was a few jolts, I was in bed at the time.  There wasn't much damage anywhere, a few garden walls were cracked but it was nothing exciting.

You may have seen the recent Taiwan earthquake. I've been to the top of Taipei 101, which was the world's tallest from its opening on 31 December 2004 until the Burj Khalifa surpassed it in 2010. In the recent Taiwan earthquake, you'll see video that shows Taipei 101 doing very little. It's a very impressive piece of engineering, but in essence very simple - a massive weight at the top of the tower, suspended by incredibly strong supports. Here's a video of it in a 6.8 earthquake a couple of years ago:

I've just messaged my brother to see if they felt anything 30 miles east of the city. I have vague memories of tremors in the early 80s, when I lived in Brooklyn.

it looks as though the epicentre was 50 miles west, pasta.

maybe all the illegals fell in a hole... and got transported back to there other hole in south america...i do know friends over there have had enough of them...

Much, much weaker than the recent earthquake in Taiwan but still unusual for New York

did Trump Tower come down?

We have only gone three months so far in 2024 and already in the world   there have been floods, earthquakes , a cyclone,a volcanic eruption, droughts, tropical storms, wildfires, tsunamis, landslides  just to mention a few of the natural disasters. -----------

I would say that isn't much different at a global level, just where on the planet it has happened - and remember that El Nino is very active this year.

Taiwan's on the Pacific Ring of Fire, New York is some distance away.

I can't think of any natural disaster worse than an earthquake - where do you hide when even the very ground beneath your feet may open up.

I suppose a tsunami is worse, but they can advance warn nowadays I believe.

big hurricanes are pretty bad, having been in 4 of them in the Usa and HK, the worst of them, for me, being Ike.....

There are quite a few fault lines in that part of the world. I think I read that there have been 550 quakes since records began.
