Is it worth paying for a professional company to do the job (attic roof and floor) or can a satisfactory result be obtained and money saved by buying the appropriate equipment (spray device, woodworm killer, protective clothing etc) and doing the job ourselves?

Thanks in advance for any input, accounts of first-hand experience, tips, ideas of cost etc.

Is the house insured? You insurers might have a view on what they require in order for them to pay out/continue the insurance.
It depends on how advanced it is, have you just seen a few flight holes, or does the roof joists & floor seem riddled with it?
For what it's worth Steve, I've been doing my own for years.
I use one of those backpack pump-up sprayers.
