I think I once read they were used to pepper poachers without doing too much harm to them.

I recall a bank robber who turned supergrass giving evidence who stated his first round in rthe breech was loaded with rice (8 shot pump action). If the teller/security guard was not compliant after a peppering with rice he went on to lead shot. I met some really nice people who I had to protect. :-(
I believe they were loaded with rock-salt.
I was taught that Caesar mustard his army, peppered the enemy and took the citadel by a salt. A seasoned warrior, obviously.
Looking around the web . . .

"I remember the gamekeeper at The Keg, having once been the recipient of the salt pellets . . . "

"when we were kids for a day out in the summer we'd go to "fairy dell" or try and dodge the farmer and his legendary supply of "salt pellets" that he'd fire at yer *** as you crossed his field . . ."

"I remember egging and looking for conkers down conker lane and I've heard about the gamekeepers,I believe they were pretty handy with the salt pellets"

You don't even have to load your own it seems; you can buy them ready-made: https://gumgullyprovision.com/product/12-gauge-rock-salt-ammunition/
I don't have much to add, but I remember a colleague telling me a similar story about a gamekeeper, who replaced lead shot with rock salt in his cartridges and would shoot poachers in the legs, if he caught them.
// I was taught that Caesar mustard his army,//

wot the same one that ad sum iam for te ? - sweet

Certainly in Ethpana - before the war 1939
( my boss was Thpanith - Basque actually - the idea was to soak your bottom wherein the shot was in a horse trough - we were all very rural in those days)

In the thivil War they clearly er shot each other with bullets
My grandad used to fill his cartridges with pearl barley when he was shooting rabbits. So that the stew thickened nicely on its own.

Retrocop,
Was it Bertie Smalls?
sandy
No. Too early. I am talking mid 80s. I wouldn't reveal the name any way on a public forum.
Question Author
I should have known that.
I remember Smalls because I read he had a portable colour tv in his police cell and all the drink he wanted while he was helping police with their inquiries.
I remember thinking at the time, Jammy sod.
My grandad had a story about Pearl Bailey and filling, Togo, although now I read your comment I realise I may have misheard. :-)
