We are a couple on our mid forties looking for somewhere to holday over christmas. Need somewhere warm that doesn't shut down, not overly festive and where we can do our own thing. Went to Australia last year and that was perfect. Any thoughts?

Well, if you've found perfection it will be hard to beat. The obvious answer is 'any major city / tourist destination in the southern hemisphere'.
We're going to Cuba for Christmas and new year. Have a look, it may tick all your boxes.
The Canaries are warm all year round.
Me and the missus have been to Tenerife over Xmas for the last 4 years and prob going to go again this year (we're in the same age range as you both). There's plenty to do, but not too busy. Temperature is a nice mid 20's C.
We usually go to Costa Adeje/Playa de Las Americas.
Maldives or Mauritius are both good at Christmas time.
I say the Canaries too.
Try looking into Malta
Gizmonster what kinds of prices are they charging for flights at christmas as i was toying with the idea of maybe flying to tenerife.
Thailand
just in case you were wondering!

Cape Town
Chiang Mai, Thailand. And you can come back with loads of lovely ( late ) Christmas presents from the Night-Markets. Christmas/new Year is the best time to be in Thailand - not too hot, not monsoon season.
