thats going to vary car to car.

My ford cars which show miles to empty normally got to red light at about 50 miles from empty. Other cars ive owned in the past used to go a lot further on red and one would turn to red just before it ran out.

Its best not to let a fuel tank get that low anyway so best just to try and keep it topped up.
when the light comes up on my car it also says 50 miles.
Be careful. If you let the petrol get as low as that, there is the risk of the fuel pump sucking up small bits of debris from the bottom of the petrol tank, and that could block the fuel system.

I don't usually let it get to the light coming on after what happened when I ran out of petrol once but the garage near work is soooo expensive I'd rather wait til I'm nearer home. As that's only about 15 miles I'm sure I'll be alright.
can you not put £5 in before leaving for home? just to top it up a bit
a bit being the appropriate phrase lol
As redcrx says, top it up. You should be OK for 15 miles if the light has just come on but you can always be caught out by traffic jams etc.

I could I suppose. I'd be embarrassed to just put a fiver in though.
You'd be more embarrassed calling out the AA because you've run out of fuel
Don't be embarrassed to put a fiver in.

The cashier couldn't care less, and even if he did, stuff him.
Nowt wrong with putting a fiver petrol in ya car! whats to be embarrassed about!
for all the garage knows You could be going on a long journey and just filling up your tank that has already got quite a lot of fuel in to start with! I often put a fiver in as i don't like to go on the red.
I have once put only 2 litres of fuel in - cos i read the price once i started filling up & that is the minimum they allow. then paid & left
Yeahh ... Stuff him .. Hoppy lol : )
To run that low on fuel picks up sht from the tank & I believe can do damage to the Cat. Converter. also, if you are stupid enough to run that low when on a Motorway you want your @rse kicking! to run out whilst you may be in the outside lane could cause a pile up.

Um, excuse me but who said anyting about a motorway?

And as I have already stated, I don't usually allow it to get so low. I don't need preaching to thank you.
Don't say your another one on here Evian Bach? You ran out of petrol once!!
Question Author
What do you mean 'another one on here'?

Yes, I ran out of petrol once. It wasn't on a motorway though.
My light has never came on. I'm starting to think it's broken...
last car 30ish.. new car, haven't worked it out yet but the petrol light comes on when it says 50 miles to go.

fairly inaccurate, I think!
