Do these idiots imagine the train will stop for them?

They could kill themselves, though that would be a darwinian result, or, more seriously derail a train and kill lots of innocents. Personally I'd ban them for life.

How do you ban a pedestrian - cut their legs off?
It seems the pedestrians are more the problem...
cut their legs off and you would still have problems with them using wheelchairs......... yes, the news this morning had pedestrians > cars going across the level crossing
I'm an impatient person but I'm not stupid. I suppose the paper can't report them as being stupid.
//The number of drivers who risk their lives - and the lives of others - by jumping the lights at rail level crossings increased by 15% last year.

Network Rail recorded 161 near-misses in 2010 That number is up from 140 incidents the previous year.

However, collisions between road vehicles and trains fell from 14 in 2009 to seven last year, and deaths at level crossings dropped from 13 to four.//

Really confused - what point is SKY news trying to make here?

Near misses up but deaths down - are they suggest ing motorists are getting better at jumping the gates?

Or is it really that this is a non-story and that the difference is within normal variation is not significant?

One day in a perfect world 50% of people will understand variance and datandard deviation

50% give or take a bit that is!

I agree with jake, I think its a slow news day
i live right by a level crossing and you would not believe the level of idioticness from drivers and pedestrians. They recently had to change our crossing from a half barrier to a whole barrier (well i say recently; it was just ufter the ufton nervet crash)
Question Author
well if pedestrians are stupid enough then they can only remove themselves from the gene pool. Vehicles however potentially cause others death and destruction.
bednobs,
just use the word idiocy; it is much quicker to type than idioticness.
I saw an old man waiting patiently at a level-crossing with his dog. He spotted a friend - tied his dog to the barrier - then went and chatted to his friend while they waited.

The train went past, up went the barrier ... and the dog.

They had to get someone to manually lower the barrier to retrieve the swinging dog.

It was fekkin' hilarious (unless you were the dog, of course).
Idiots will always find ways of putting themselves and others in danger, it's the nature of things. In many of the places I've been to in the world pedestrians and motorists co-exist with rail traffic without the need for barriers.....you just cross when it looks clear.

Might it mean that the drivers are getting cleverer at dodging the trains?

To all those who do this,I say,

Live and let die.

It,s their own choice,to play chicken.

I posted this fairly light-heartedly.
I had no intention of showing a "could,nt care less" attitude, towards train passengers.
When those idiots are caught jumping the lights at railway crossings, a £1000 fine and 6 points would make them think twice about doing it again.
