If they are reintroduced would they not present a serious health risk to the refugees housed on them?

I think many cruise ship passengers would testify to that!

True, it's not long since the press was full of reports of viruses spreading like wildfire on cruise ships.
not least aboard the Estoninan ferry that the Gov used for the G7 conference in Cornwall, moored in Falmouth, to house the Plod on....12 covid cases they said, others say triple that figure at least and that it was the hot spot that sent Falmouth numbers soaring.
Probably not since they could empty them in Australia Sandy.
The prison ship moored off Portland, Dorset, closed in 2006. Maybe that's not what you mean by hulk?
Question Author
Prudie,
That's exactly what I meant.
Not so very long ago.
It will only be a serious health risk to those arriving illegally by stealth.

Immigration via recognised channels will remain as safe as it's ever been.
Probably less of a health risk than living in a squalid tent and sleeping on cardboard in northern France.
But all these incomers are young, in rude health, not burdening the NHS at all. I think they'll survive.
Are they going to reintroduce them?
Question Author
Naomi,
They were mentioned on Radio 4 this morning as an alternative to expensive hotels for refugees.
Whether they're ever used, like flights to Ruanda, remains to be seen.
well the hulks ( bits or remains of a ship) lasted for as long as a wooden ship lasts. Around 50y. Dickens hulks were the ships' remains from Trafalgar. Hence the fighting Temeraire - 1838

The name shows it was a captured French ship and turned around in time for Trafalgar.

I hadnt realised they had a prison ship at Verne
The crazy thing is, it would be cheaper to put them on actual cruise ships than what it costs to keep them in hotels...someone (other than the traffickers) is getting very rich from importing humans.
Hi Woy, nice to see you contributing
Who cares, no one is forcing the illegals to come here.

Get them commissioned ASAP.
//They were mentioned on Radio 4 this morning as an alternative to expensive hotels for refugees.//

But were they referred to as "prison hulks", Sandy?
Probably, Radio 4 is the home of the liberal left these days.
Using those hulks seems a good idea. I trust they will be towed to the French beaches first.
Excellent idea OG.
Got to laugh at how the language changed overnight.

Yesterday they said they would be accommodated on redundant cruise ships. Today they are referring to them as ferries.
