okay religious people, can you explain to me why your God lets such bad things happen, please? I am bemused.
apart from what we hear/see on the news, I had a terrible childhood, I've grown up and seen such bad things happen to good people (and vice versa), and this week my daughter's 16 year old friend died in a dreadful accident.
I'm not after sympathy.. you've probably all been through something similar.
but why does your God allow such things to happen?

It baffles me how highly intelligent people can possibly believe in a god.
Yep...

There is something in the bible, I haven't read it, where God basically leaves us all to it because we are so sinful. The only ones he protects are the ones that asked him into their lives.

I don't buy it....how is a 7 year old brought up by a pair of junkies to know how to ask God into their life. Or are there different rules??
Was the 16 year old religious Sara?

ganesh, you may be right.. but that's a long wait, and I'm impatient.

jno, no, not 200.. but fair's fair. 16 is just starting out in life. and I think happiness is important, otherwise what's the point in just existing?
Wait, jno, are you saying that a supposedly perfect, ominicient and omnipotent being made a mistake and regretted it?

Such a thing would seem a tad improbable - dare I venture so far as to say paradoxical? - if he were to actually exist outside of the imagination of human beings.
There are two views about God. One is that he is the prime mover who got the universe going and the other that he is a "personal" being who looks after us.

Man has to have a god because he can rationalise about his situation and knows there are many things he cannot control, the worst one being his own mortality. So he goes for the second option as it offers more comfort.
jno, if that's the way you see it, then that's your view!..............certainly is not mine!...

thank you yogi, and I'm sorry to hear about your friend. a tragic loss, and so sad for those left behind x
Question Author
ummmm, exactly.

Hopkirk, exactly!

squarebear, I don't know but most 16 yr olds are typical selfish teenagers.. as they probably should be!
I know it's sad,and I'm with you hopkirk, but some intelligent people really do believe, and some scientists do.Can't fathom it,it's very easy to defeat them in an argument with logic though, and all they have in the end is their 'faith' which can't be explained.
Thanks Sara....appreciated x
True and my thoughts go out to her family and friends but I have to ask why you expect a God she didn't believe in to protect her? As I say though it's a terrible thing to happen to someone so young.
People in Europe should thank God, if they believe, that they were born where they were. Even the poorest of us lives much better than millions in Asia, Africa, or S America.
But having said that, we're all doomed. Some will die young, others live such lives that they might wish they had.
If there is a God he set things in motion and doesn't care much what happens to us along the way.
keyplus - //However if someone does suffer due to another human being's actions then do not forget that God did not tell him to do so//

You are dodging the question (again).... Sara3 asked why God lets such bad things happen. This omnipotent God who rules everything in the Universe doesn't seem to be able to managed one single human misfortune except in the ecclesiastical fairybook aka the bible.
A Christian believer would know of the trials of Job; whose faith was sorely tested yet he continued to have faith in God.

As for non-believers, an unfortunate death reminds us of our own mortality and of those close to us. Each moment is precious with those you love as it could be the last; live life as best you can for yourself without harming others. Be thankful you & your children are well.

I know I'm just angry about this girl right now. I've told a few people at work, who I know are quite religious and I want to say "explain that, then!" but I can't do that.

I wonder if they're questioning it themselves.

squarebear.. and an innocent baby?
Sandy, because we apparently fcuked it up ourselves...
As I say, I'm not religious and really can't understand why in this modern age people believe in such nonsense.
Question Author
tambo, you are right. the fragility of life has been hammered home once again.

my daughter has some hospital tests coming up. will she be punished for having a non-believing mother?

I'm sure you rarely get religious kids from non-religious parents.
