Have you ever seen a ghost, and if so what did it look like, where do you think it came from - and were you afraid? I'd be interested to hear your experiences.

naomi, when I said, "trapped between this world and the next", I meant that the ghosts are between worlds (physical and spiritual) but they may not even know this.
Having said that. It puzzles me about the ones who seem to have more sinister intentions such as those termed poltergeist or energies that seem to be drawn to children.
The medium that I went to see said that before he knew how to use his gift, he used to work in a bank and would see people standing behind the glass but that's all they would do, just stand there.
I think it works a bit like a radio wave. Certain people have the proper receiver and are tuned in to see the ghosts and others haven't quite got the station fully tuned so they only see a glimpse of the nearly departed and some never turn it on.

I don't know if there is 'this world and the next'. I wonder if both worlds co-exist in the same space, but in different dimensions?

I have seen several ghosts over the years, but the sightings usually occur when I am with my best friend, who I have known since school. We have been to several pyschics etc over the years (more for fun than anything else) and they have all said (unprompted) that when the two of us are together something comes after us, for reasons unknown, but I have plenty of experience of that, having living with him for 3 years. The first time we were 17 and staying in a caravan and something I can only describe as non-human and evil was in there with us. Some really freaky things happened and he was possessed at one point, but his dead grandfather was also there and he helped us. Since then similar things have happened on and off over the years, and it is always the same thing that makes an appearance. I saw it once, and I can hardly describe it - suffice to say I didn't sleep for a week! Anyone know anything about this sort of experience???
naomi..I have members of my own family who have seen ghosts and my partner had a really strange experiance when she lived in germany so I cant write off everyone who has seen a ghost as dellusional.But I do think people can be mistaken as well.Personally, Ive spent years looking into the occult and paranormal and found nothing.I would love to see a ghost but the only spirits I see are behind the bar in my local.

I don't know what other religious books have to say on the matter, but the Bible is quite clear. There are no ghosts of departed people. There are, however, demons, that can imitate perfectly, anybody that has died, complete with the knowledge that departed person possessed.

Amazing story Naomi, I wonder what you were supposed to learn from that? For Catholics the idea of ghosts being on the earth is compatible with our belief in Pergatory. Just read this in a Peter Kreeft theology book and thought I would this up. Although you are not a Christian the third one may be interesting to you Naomi.

They seem to be working out some unfinished earthly business, or suffering some purgatorial purification until released from their earthly business. These ghosts seem to need to learn many painful lessons about their past lives on earth.

Wizard, I agree with you. I think people can be mistaken too, and often are. Catching 'something' out of the corner of an eye, and thinking it's something unearthly, when in reality it's just a curtain blowing in a draught - and it's so easy in the middle of the night when all is quiet to mistake the creaking of the joints of the house, or the tapping of the pipes for something completely different.

Luna, I'm not sure I know what you mean when you talk about our spirits evolving through the bodies of others? Do you mean reincarnation, when a soul is reborn into a new body in each new life? If so, then according to Buddhist philosophy, there is no limit on the number of times a person will be reincarnated. A soul continues to be reborn into various lives until it reaches perfection, or nirvana.
Fairkatrina, how do you know he was possessed? What did he do - and how did you deal with it? Can you try to describe it - and what it did? How do you know the grandfather was there - did you see him. Please tell us more.
Theland, the information you're quoting was written by an ancient scribe, who couldn't have known a great deal about it because Jesus spoke to a ghost - Moses. Moses had definitely died, because the bible tells us he died (Deut. 34:5). Can I just ask you Theland, why is your religion so full of gloom, doom and fear? I'm not being facetious here - I really would like to know. There seems so very little happiness in it - apart from the presumed joy of going to heaven once you're dead and if you're lucky. The whole of life for Born Again Christians seems to be shrouded in dread.

I don't go along with the idea of ghosts from purgatory or hell, because I really do think those concepts were specifically designed by man to implant literally 'the fear of god' into people's minds, but it's interesting nevertheless. When I say my friend was possessed, all I know is that for a brief moment it wasn't him in his body, he acted out of character and his eyes were different, like someone else's eyes were where his should have been. It sounds insiginficant but it changed his whole face, and was really quite scary. We know his grandfather was there because in the days before this happened I had seen him on several occasions, although my friend never had, he took the form that he had when he was about the same age of us and looked like a real person; I later recognised him from some old photos my friend's mum had (which I had never seen before), and it was then that I knew who he was.
On the night that my friend was possessed we were at one end of the caravan and we knew that this thing was at the other end, we could sense it, and hear it moving, and many objects moved, the microwave and CD player turned on and off etc. We were sat by the window opposite each other and where my friend's reflection should have been I could see the figure of his grandad, I know it wasn't his reflection because my friend had his back to the window but the figure was looking into the room. It sounds odd but he was telling us telepathically what to do to deal with the thing in the other room (basically it was like a battle between your head and your heart - when you could feel fear rising in your gut more freaky stuff happened, like the thing was getting stronger because of our fear, but when we refused to be afraid - which was very difficult! - it seemed to retreat). I know it sounds like hysteria gone too far, but several times we would sense the same thing, i.e. we would say simultaneously "it's by the CD player" and then the CD player would turn on.

He'd already thrown and smashed things, and now his face was inches from mine and he was screaming and spitting at me - and just as you describe, his face changed - it seemed to swell up and the colour changed - and his eyes didn't seem to be his own - they were different. I'd seen him in plenty of rages, but I'd never seen this - and that's when it occurred to me that it wasn't really him - there was someone else there.
I think you were right about not feeding this thing with your fear. When I saw this change in my husband, I stopped hearing his screams for a second, and then for the first time I was suddenly unafraid - I somehow knew he couldn't hurt me any more. I packed a couple of bags, put my daughter in the car and left him - and I never went back.
