I always assumed that the ones who have mannish haircuts and dress in a male manner are the ones that people say are 'Butch' .

Dave ...it is a part of the uniform........short cropped hair, woolen sweater and thick skirt, often bespectacled and can't attract a block........so.......try a woman.
