Was a family function (not my family) recently.Overheard conversation between husband & wife in their 30s. Both professional working people.
Man "I'd like to buy a drink. Can I have some money please?"
He got it and brought the change back.
Maybe, I'm easily shocked, but I was. Thought it was so demeaning for him.
It might have been that he didn't care to carry a wallet or coins in his pocket, so he stashed them in his wife's handbag. Especially true if he was wearing tight jeans.
I know couples who have joint accounts, but only one of them is in charge of the finances. Don't think that's unusual either. Some men prefer it that way - and vise versa.
Maybe he's a gambler and can't be trusted with money!
I think the answers you've received above are far more likely, though :-)
did he look like he was feeling demeaned? how shocking could it have been to you if that's all you overheard. maybe he only had his plastic with him and the bar could only take cash. did you continue to observe the couple's subsequent behavior to establish a buying pattern?
Now it can be told:
if my wife and I are out (at wherever) and I'm not wearing a jacket, I ask her to put the car keys in her handbag, because (a) they (key/remote plus fob plus garage key) feel too bulky for my trouser pocket, and (b) I have this morbid fear that one of the buttons on the remote might, via some devilish agency, be pressed and cause untold disaster.
Dotty, I think CailinDeas should secretly film them next time.
Only then can we get a clearer picture of this couple, and how his awful wife treats him :P
My oh sometimes asks me to look after his wallet if we are going somewhere there are likely to be pickpockets, or if he will be sitting down and he doesn't want to bend or snap the cards in his wallet.
I always carry my wallet, but I tend to give Trish any change I get as I hate carrying coins, they always seem to make holes in my pockets, and I'd never carry one of those man bag things.
