what exactly does a dermatologist do and how much do they earn? also, how do dermatologists get into big designer skincare and beauty companies such as chanel and clinique? i am planning to do medicine at university - can i use this to get jobs at such institutions as the resident dermatologist or something similar?

I work in a hospital and all the doctors say that dermatology is the best speciality for the following reasons:

1.  9-5, no 'on call'.

2. No week-end working.

3.  Fantastic income from private practice!

Good luck in your chosen career.

a dermatologist is just a skin specialist dealing with all sorts of skin problems from acne to psoriasis,,and more it is just a 9.to 5 job as the majority of the work will be outpatients..to get jobs with the beauty companies .you would probably have to study chemistry as well as most of our cosmetics are chemicals and you would need to understand exactly what went into the make up etc...dermatologists normally work at hospitals and then they go onto specialise in what you have in mind,,best of luck mullein

You won't be skint.

Hmmm, in your chosen career, you'll need the basic five rules of derm:

1. if its red, whiten it

2 If its white, redden it

3 it its sunken, fill it,

4 if its raised shave it,

5 if all else fails use steroids

I'm sure there is more to it than that - seems rather short for six years at med school and then seven years run through training.

Good luck
