if it took an average man 15 mins to walk 1 mile , then he stopped for a break for 30 seconds then walked half a mile back then stopped for a further 30 seconds and returned to the end point of his original journey , how long has it took him to walk the half mile back ?

This is the most fun I've had on AB for years.

smartypants,
whatever you are on, can I have some, please?
All the sane people calculated it took the man 7.5 mins to walk the last half mile. The OP admits he got km and miles mixed up so, using 4 kph instead of 4 mph it would take the man 7.5 x 8 / 5 mins = 12 mins to get back Then add the 30 secs he paused for and there's the erroneous answer the OP arrived at.
"you are confusing everyone"
yes you nauhty naughty boy jim, how dare you confuse everyone lol
Well, credit where it's due, bhg, you've probably solved the dilemma.

Still, I'm not in the mood to be told I'm "confusing everyone", especially from somebody who thinks walking a mile in 15 minutes means you're doing 15 mph.
Question Author
you are nearly correct bhg been the closest to finding the answer so far remembering the 2 x 30 second breaks he took might make it click. remember thats 1 whole min
irrespective of whether the OP confused (thereby completely misinforming us) miles and kilometres, the question is pretty trivial.
You must be very proud, bhg.
Question Author
yes that was an error jim imposibble to acheive but thats nothing to do with the answer anyway, the speed dont matter its the time he took to return to the original ending point of the whole journey in total, are u all with it now?
You asked how long to WALK the half-mile back. The answer is still 7.5 mins as he was resting, not walking, for minute. Only 7.5 mins were spent walking back.
Question Author
remembering the 30 seconds break he took , he had 2 of those remember thats where u are all going wrong
also, the OP asked how long it took to walk back, so any pauses or rests are completely irrelevant.
one more thing - the end point of his original journey is 1 mile away from his start point, so it appears he initially walked 1 mile, paused, walked 1/2 mile back whence had come, paused and then turned and walked back to the 1 mile point
err no, the original ending point of the "whole journey in total" doesnt happen till the whole journey is over
i till dont get it. Even if you are measuring in km/h the answer required is a time, so it doesnt matter if you measure it in kmph or mph
"we" are all going wrong are we? riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight
jim - I'm not sure that getting my mind into the same state as someone who is totally confused is something to be proud of; I like to think I'm still sane.
A fair point. I meant no offence :)
GAain smartypants - you only asked forthe time it took to walk the half mile back. Nothing else, no breaks!
jim - I realised you were joking.
Question Author
but most of u are saying he ended his journey when he walked half a mile back but if you read it correctly the end of his journey was actaully the original ending destination he had targeted. dont forget the man walked half a mile back and he had two 30 second breaks before he returned on his journey to the final end point so he has walked more than 1 mile in theory
bednobs,
in the original question, he returned to the end point of his original journey - i.e. where he was after 15 minutes' walking.
Presumably, he passed Jim's crashed car en route.
If this same man takes an hour to dig a hole ...how long will it take 2 men to dig half a hole?
