Just answered the door to a man who I noticed straight away wasn't wearing any kind of ID. Then he said "I just want to ask you, does God hava a name?" Why do people feel compelled to do this? They must get so much abuse as well.

I saw the first line only and thought this was going an entirely different direction for a minute.
My stock response when I get Bible-thumpers at my door is to say sweetly "I'm afraid I never discuss religion on the doorstep". They back off pretty quickly.
Goodness knows.

My mum is a Born Again and she used to sing in town. It didn't bother me but it really bothered my sister.

I told him I`m about to go out to the cinema (which I am) and he asked what was I going to see. They try to get you into conversation so that they can spin religion into it in some way. I knew someone who's daughter was run over by a car at aged 6 and the Witnesses caught her when she was at a low ebb. She and most of the rest of the family were converted for life.
Oh somewhere in the NT ( new testament to you godless lot) there is a the injunction ( order ) to go forth and multiply - that is convert and evangelise

and some do

The JWs are fun - they believe there is a lost aramaic version of the gospels whereas I know they were written in Greek, so we have some fun on the doorstep....
I get the God Squad visiting once a year it is annoying but, as you say, they get tons of abuse so I try to be pleasant.

PP - I feel sorry for them when they visit you. You would confuse the hell out of them and make them question their belief in god. :-)

They called here this morning, I just smile and say not thank you and I have to go because of the dogs barking.
I don't even bother to reply. I just slam the door in their face!
I excuse myself saying that I have sheaves to bring in.

Rejoicing.
I was walking my dog in the park yesterday and this well dressed, nice looking young man was walking towards me. He smiled as he got closer, so I smiled back and then he started talking religion to me and waved a leaflet in my face! I said 'please don't harass me about religion while I'm out walking my dog' and walked on. That's NEVER happened to me before !

His name is Brian, like his son. I saw the documentary.
True story.... (from some years ago)
I was down my Mums house...where there was a bit of a family gathering. Nothing special, just a few of us all converging at the the same time. We were all just catching up with each other when my mum spotted, out of the window, JW's door knocking their way up the street.
When they got to my mums I was sent out to deal with the nusuience.
I answered the door and let them rabbit for a bit and then told them that I would be delighted to discuss our opinions on religion but at the moment I was busy sacrificing a cockeral to Beelzebub and if they cared to return I would be happy to discuss religious differences.
Never came back for some years after that. Funny thing is...they seem to have taken it seriously!!!

Is that a cock & bull story?
I don’t see the need to be rude to them, I politely decline and wish them a good day.
I find a polite no thank you usually suffices - though they did once catch me out during a rather frenzied 7 year old Girls Birthday party.

I expressed my disappointment at the door that they weren't the men from the Orphanage come to collect - they did laugh fortunately then high tailed it out.
//Is that a cock & bull story?//
NO!

No more than a cock n bull story that was trying to be sold to my aged mum!

I`m never rude to them either. No point in it but I was on just one occasion just after 9/11 (a bit close to home) and two women turned up on the doorstep. I was busy upstairs and ran down to open it to be greeted with "We live in dangerous times" I told her that I knew that and slammed the door. I didn't need them to tell me.
//I don’t see the need to be rude to them//
Do you not?
