That's not true. The Trussell Trust opened its first foodbank twenty-two years ago - under a Labour government - and actually, maggiebee, you'll find foodbanks in other countries too. Guardian hype,

They were called Libraries when I was a lad.
If people can't afford both eating and heating, why don't they just get better jobs? Quite simple, as some on here would say.

Still plenty of food and warmth for the illegals in their 4* hotels.
With government help for fuel bills etc I am better off as a pensioner than when I was working having been a carer on minimum wage.
Back in the 60s and 70s people would lurk in the reading rooms of libraries to keep warm, and OAPs would ride the buses
There has always been folk who struggle financially, there has always been periods of austerity and hardship where the poorest people struggle more than usual.

I dont know where you come from Maggie,but its worse up here in Scotland.A colder climate,colder winters and the SNP regime up here dont give a damn about us.We have to rely on the English government for our winter top-ups,the English government for our monthly £66 energy top-ups.The SNP give us ***-all.They would rather concern themselves about pretendy referendums than care about us ordinary Scots.
