It fills me with sadness and despair to post this link to my home city. I really don't know the answer (if indeed there is one) to this behaviour. Youths being blamed but I believe some "rioters" were in their 30s. This all happened not 2 miles from where I live

That's shocking, maggiebee- very upsetting for most of you, I would think. It's fortunate this didn't end in tragedy. I hope this is the last year it happens.
Gosh, that's so disturbing to see. What gets into people that they 'behave' in this way?
Must've been terrifying. What triggered the rioting?
"I know at this time of year we see trouble across the whole of Scotland"

?!? Really ?
What's wrong with you folk north of the border ?
Possibly the plen anes versus the ingin anes, tiggerblue.

Two entrenched camps.

tiggerblue10 not sure, just hear rumours. Apparently the police wouldn't let them build their own bonfire so they did it anyway - more than one I believe. Morons.
On a more serious note it's what happens when you turn a police force into a police service making them little more than social workers and form fillers.
There have always been dregs and scum but in the past they received short shrift, often the shortest.

OG, I think local councils discouraged folk from building their own bonfires and only go to organised displays. Shouldn't happen until 5th November of course but....... No organised displays in Dundee this year as they are strapped for cash so I think there will be many "illegal" bonfires across Scotland. Fire brigade are always called to extinguish them (in towns anyway). Feel sorry for the kids.
Well here is part of the problem:

"Some of the people in the video footage will be well-known to them."

The reluctance of the Courts and, as Douglas says above the failure of Plod to uphold the law, and mete out harsh sentences is the underlying problem.

Probably no consolation Maggie, but it is not just where you live.
I remember the mass riots a few years back and my area was hit quite hard. I was so scared. At the time Cameron promised that the rioters would 'feel the full force of the law'.

Well I hope these nasty scum are caught, with the help of CCTV footage, and locked up.
From the article./"When people are bored and hungry, and people have got nothing to keep them going, then this seems to be the way that it plays out," /
If they are bored and hungry, why are they spending loads of money on fireworks?
It's really shocking, and it's a shame we can't get the sale of fireworks banned.
I just read of trouble in Stratford, London...again unruly yobs throwing fireworks. Including a young mum pushing a pram. They were invited to attend with fireworks and masks via social media.
Sadly, some people can find money for what they want, whatever that is.
I so wish the UK would ban fireworks too, Barsel. They are illegal in Ireland with a penalty of ten thousand euros or five years in prison.
I have heard one this year probably brought by a tourist or from up north brought in by idiots. Nobody hangs around to light more than one here as the guards are really hot on no fireworks in the south.

Our local MP spoke in the Scottish Parliament today to let them know that, following the outrageous behaviour of a few last night, Asda and Tesco are banning all fireworks. Step in the right direction.
I wish there was a full ban on the sale of fireworks to the general public, across the UK. Organised displays are better anyway.
A bit like my home town (Derry/Londonderry) in the 70s and 80s.
Terrifying to live through: unnerving and bewildering.
You have all my sympathy.

I hope it all settles down and life can return to normal.
Take care.
