I did not think it possible for the UK to have a worse Prime Minister than Boris Johnson; and I think that should Labour win the next general election, they will be just as incompetent as the current Tory government.

Liz Truss appears to be proving me wrong on both of the above counts.

Corby, you say it was 'the right decision' by which I assume you are referring to the U Turn on top rate tax?

I cannot for the life if me conceive a universe where the tax cut was thought to be a good idea in the first place!

Utter insanity, and worse, seriously poor political misjudgment, which does not bode well for a new government.
Worse PM than Boris? There's a whole lot of difference between making mistakes, and deliberate deceit over and over again. In saying that there's still time for the latter.
Yes, the U-turn was the correct decision but it would have been better if it hadn't been thought to be a good idea in the first place.

Now it's a case of, "Nothing to do with me mate, it was him!" as Truss appeared to blame the Chancellor.

The Chancellor then let the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Chris Philp, who's said to have suggested the cut, take the flak on TV.

//How is Liz Truss proving you wrong in your thinking that a Labour Govt would be just as incompetent as the current Tory government?//

As pointed out previously, when a Labour government has a PM who lies to the public and parliament, unlawfully prorogues said parliament, breaks his own laws, attempts to change the rules to cover a lobbying scandal, changes the ministerial code, lies about a predatory sex pest, sorts out contracts of worthless PPE for party donors(bypassing the regulations), sees 2 ethics advisers resign, then is replaced by a rabbit in the headlights who would be out of her depth in a saucer but has a chancellor who would need to take his socks off to count past 10 THEN I’ll grant you that you can make a comparison.
But as a non-Tory voter and in light of the last 3 years I would have expected you to be clamouring for new and trustworthy leadership, no?
Corby - // Yes, the U-turn was the correct decision but it would have been better if it hadn't been thought to be a good idea in the first place. //

That's an honest, if manifestly understated response!!

Having listened to the radio, and smelt burning rubber from here, as various Westminster types attempted to back-pedal while trying to avoid addressing the issue going forward - the credibility of all concerned - they are left with a serious problem that is entirely of their own making.

I repeat my point - how it is possible to trust a government that has anyone in it who thinks that this was a good idea, is going to be really hard to sell to the people.

Sorry; wrong thread!!
how do you truss a govt ?
by what they do I suppose not what they say

the new issue is Boris and or Trump - they lied ( and lied) and now we say politicians are primarily crooks. (the only exception I can see is Shipman - people looked at their GP and DIDN'T think - oh he is another shipman).
TTT - when will you face the truth i.e. that the Tory party are now un-electable?
From one Omnishambles to another, the Conservatives appear to be incapable of forming a competent Government.
diddly: "TTT - when will you face the truth i.e. that the Tory party are now un-electable?" - when they fail to win an election.
TTT - // ToraToraToradiddly: "TTT - when will you face the truth i.e. that the Tory party are now un-electable?" - when they fail to win an election. //

Actually, I don't think they are the same thing.

Labour with Starmer - probably lose an election.

Labour with Corbyn - unelectable.

Conservatives with Johnson - probably lose an election.

Conservatives with Truss - unelectable.
Like I said. Be careful what you wish for. Should have stuck with Boris.

Is it too much to ask for to have a PM who is honest and competent?
ok Andy so Starmer will probably lose and Truss is Unelectable? Right oh, so who wins then the loser or the unelectable?

TTT - // ok Andy so Starmer will probably lose and Truss is Unelectable? Right oh, so who wins then the loser or the unelectable? //

Neither.

If either Party wants to have a realistic hope of winning an election, they will start preparing to replace both their leaders now.
With whom? I don't see anyone among any of them with the necessary leadership qualities.

I've never understood the antagonism towards Starmer. Okay he's dull and plodding and couldn't be described as statesmanlike but he's intelligent, honest and competent. His biggest negative seems to be that he comes from the social democrat side rather than union.
Both main parties are deeply divided within themselves seemingly without the ability to resolve the divisions without actually destroying the party. Needs a seismic realignment but they are so entrenched and self-serving that may prove impossible...
