I read and reread this story and there are gaps in my understanding of how this plan worked.

I, initially, thought that he played better chess because he was in a good mood from all the endorphins and other hormones but I suspect that a third party may have been involved. I wonder if there is any proof that the guy cheated.

It's from the Daily Star so there is also the possibility that it is all a made-up story.

I admit that I didn't check the story out. It was so bizarre that I just thought that it was an amusing little story.

It seems like the Star was having a slow news day.

I suppose nothing's black & white..

Cheating at chess?

He made a rookie mistake.
There was probably someone else in the know otherwise how would he have been found out. He wouldn't have jumped up and confessed unless he was stupid.
They should tell him where he can stick his beads ...
Why didn't this supposed hidden person advising him play himself? What's the point in putting a worse player in the chair?
The hidden person would have had access to a chess computer ...
But how would the hidden accomplice convey the information? Are the beads radio controlled?
Sandy:
I'm really trying not to think about the type of advertisements that my screen is likely to be flooded with from now on, as (in an attempt to answer your question), I've just googled 'bluetooth anal beads'!

However, here's your answer anyway ;-)

Morse code ?
Emoji in the title.
When did that start to work?
Before either of us knew,,
dagman: "Why didn't this supposed hidden person advising him play himself?" - because the hidden person would have access to a chess computer and other net resources.
sandyRoe: "But how would the hidden accomplice convey the information? Are the beads radio controlled? " - yes they would have worked out a code using vibrations and transmitted them via a radio control device.
...all they have to do is transmit 4 characters per move, that's pretty simple with morse code for example.
Should have jammed them up his Jacksie so no one knew.

A smiley face is a character in most fonts, just as letters and numbers are, Gromit. On a Windows computer with a numeric keypad (but not using the numbers across the top of the keyboard), all one has to do to use them is to keep the Alt key pressed down while typing the relevant 'Alt code' for the required symbol:

Otherwise one can use the Windows Character Map, which is accessed via Start > Windows Accessories. (On an Android or iOS device, there are ways of typing special characters too).

So AB's server sees a smiley face as no different to a letter or a number. It's simply another character.
My usual way of cheating at chess is when i know i am losing i pick up the whole board and smack my opponent with the whole lot.Not very sporting, but im Scottish. So that makes everything OK.
How would that be cheating?
